Question for people that use Epass and DON'T live in the US

Have you guys ever compared the amount you see you're going to withdraw from the ATM machine, and the exchange rate, with the actual money that came out of your Epassporte account?

Have you noticed any difference in the values?

XMaster 09-24-2006 06:25 PM

now i have a headache :winkwink:

I think that the ATMs use some exchange rate set from VISA (not sure about it, though).

Anyway, everytime I withdraw (doesn't happen very often), the ammount in the local currency is very close to the exchange rate you can get in a bank or an exchange bureau.

msan 09-24-2006 06:30 PM

I haven't bother to spot the difference in value since the exchange rate changes frequently. As long as I can withdraw the money it's fine with me.

Spunky 09-24-2006 06:41 PM

I don't really bother..our exchange rate is fairly close like 10 cents apart

madawgz 09-24-2006 06:58 PM

epassporte does the proper exchange rate, nothing to worry about

ive asked before

Ecchi22 09-24-2006 07:00 PM

Just $2 fee, fine to me. Thanks ePass ;)

Varius 09-24-2006 07:03 PM

I sometimes get a better rate....for example, last tiem I went to Montreal the bank was giving 16%, and wihdrawing form ePass I got a 19-21% rate on few different days. :)

Sore 09-24-2006 07:06 PM

I only use it for transfers.

Damian_Maxcash 09-24-2006 07:08 PM

I probably should - I have been thinking about moving to Bank account transfers again and it would be interesting to see what offers best value for money.

Project-Shadow 09-24-2006 07:08 PM

21 Sep 2006 - £200.00 GBP - $389.30
Exchange rate was: 200 British Pound = 376.90 US Dollar

So in theory I lost $10 on the withdrawl.. meh i'm over it

I know that. That's EXACTLY why I asked. Because I've used my credit cards in the past to withdraw money from ATMs, and the exchange rate I saw on the ATMs was exactly what I was charged (I usually check). But with Epassporte it seems I'm loosing around $10 - $15 dollars each time I withdraw money.

That's roughly $90 a month. $810 this year alone.

Seems like quite a lot of cash to me.

I just checked 20 receipts I had and I NEVER got a better rate. Not one time. I always loose some money.

:(

EXACTLY! Now if you're doing 10 withdraws a month you're loosing $100/month. $1200 a year.

czarina 09-24-2006 07:20 PM

I am in Mexico right now, and the exchange is exact for me. and I check it each time

you pay tax on the money you withdraw?

and how much would be the wire fee the sponsors would take instead of using epass?

or how much fees would you pay on checks?

you should spend your time on more useful calculations :winkwink:

squishypimp 09-24-2006 07:28 PM

yeah visa/banks rape everyone when the exchange rate occurs.

Hey bro... Fala aeeee heheh....

Well wire cost much more, sponsor charges 25-30$ and bank more 30$....

I don't worry about 5-10$ per withdraw i tried get the max limit of day to not loose much..

Jarmusch 09-24-2006 07:32 PM

The ATM machine must be shaving.

CaptainHowdy 09-24-2006 07:42 PM

It's always a couple of cents less than your official dollar exchange rate... A guy from the bank explained to me sometime ago but i drink heavily so I forgot... Overall, blame your bank or country :).

E$_manager 09-24-2006 07:47 PM

I never noticed any big robbery from epass.

stev0 09-24-2006 08:40 PM

maybe you're doing alot of transactions and not taking the withdrawl fee into account? I think it just shows up in the conversion..

wdforty 09-24-2006 08:54 PM

Here's one from today.. I took out 400 in my currency, which was USD 310 according to epassporte...

310.14 USD = 400.00 AUD
310.14 USD = 412.46 AUD (Source: XE.com)

Vitasoy 09-24-2006 11:03 PM

minus the $2 fee, the exchange rate is determined by the bank supplier of the ATM machine

Are you living there or just visiting?

I live in Hermosillo, Sonora. Where are you?

Egomancer 09-24-2006 11:14 PM

You haVe a 2-3% withdrawal tax from VISA. Please read carefully the online contract that epassporte has. There should be all the taxes.

this part of ePass seems to work fine for me.. however, I will be now more carefull about my receipts..

Antonio 09-25-2006 02:28 AM

I believe the exchange rate is set by the bank whose ATM you draw the money from, you sshould look at their "we sell" exchange rate and not the "official" exchange rate which gets published in the paper every day. In my case the difference is about 20c, maning if the official exchange rate is 7.50 for the dollar my bank will most likely be buying dollars for 7.30 and selling them for 7.70.

Don't trust the ATM exchange rates anyway. I'm not using epass, but saying in general. Most of the banks, if they show you the balance of your foreign account in the local currency, will show you the balance based on the "official", "median" or however they call it rate, not the actuall rate they buy currency from you. Im not sure what's that about and why, but it's how it is. Even the bank tellers don't know that detail sometimes. ATMs always give me higher value on my foreign accounts then what i really have.

okdesign 09-25-2006 04:09 AM

Exchange rate is set by VISA!
