What does it take to start a new site today?
My answer would be money. This is 2006 not 1996 and the biggest mistake people make is thinking they can start on a shoe string and compete.
Then experience, knowledge and talent. The days of the newbie are over. Hard truth but can anyone think of a newbie who opened a site in the last two years who is still around? Now think of all the programs who crashed and burned. Then a great idea, which is where the other things come into play. Because if you do not have the money to back it and the experience, knowledge and talent to put it together and market it, you will just be another site that opened this week. And there are 100s of programs doing that every month. Way down the line is content and traffic. Get the above wrong and all the content and traffic will not save you. Well you won't get the traffic and if you do you won't get the sign ups. So what do you think and give us some thinking behind it. |
everyone has their own way of doing something. creating sites is nothing different :) good luck to you :)

yeah, money is a big factor.. and the more you have the more chance on succeeding you have :)

The idea is an important thing. Without it, a new site on a quite saturated market wonīt succeed.
The idea alone wonīt work without content. Depending on the idea content can be expensive or cheap. So if the idea needs expensive content, itīs an expensive idea which needs stronger start up capital. Without doubt the most important thing is building business relationships. Theyīll bring traffic and sales opportunities. Experience, knowledge and talent may support a start up, but without a decent amount of money all three are worthless. So money is an important part of a start up. But money alone wonīt bring success. Give 10 webmasters the same decent amount of it and I bet 8 will fail with a startup. Success is based of a mix of your points mentioned above. Thatīs the highway to success. And donīt forget itīs hard work, otherwise it can become a Highway to Hell easily. |

I started a site a year ago and even though it's not making me rich - it's bringing some OK on-the-side money and it took pretty much nothing to start it.

Hey Man, There will always be room for newbies. Call it fresh meat or new blood it?s the future.
I?m biased because I?m a newbie myself. I?m starting with some clean blog type sites then a topsite list and probably a camportal. I consider these ?free sites? my product and the affiliate links up sells until I put together a paid product for others to promote. Oh I responded to say I?m starting from scratch with less than a hundred I had in a paypal account. So I think traffic would be the key to success. Of course with money you could buy traffic couldn?t you. Fuck me, maybe I?m backwards. |

only n00bs think "ideas" matter. if you have real business experience you know that ideas are quite cheap and common. everyone has ideas... probably only 1:10,000 can turn it into a money making business.
great vision and understanding, great planning and exceptional execution matter. ideas are everywhere. they are not only cheap... they are free... and everyone has them. everyone thinks they have that "great idea" and yet only a few people in a 1000 can/will actually make it happen and just a handful of those will suceed. |
you need about 50,000$ to make something relly successful, unless you find a new niche
|
You can start a site on a shoe string budget. But you need to be able to reinvest that incomming money into more for the site.

It "can" be done for next to nothing if you have a lot of energy, time and specialized skills (a few examples: current traffic possession, ability to code and make traffic tools, or a large group of friends and associates that you can align, partner or revshare with.........etc) However, if you can enter this 'business' or any with working capital you are in a much greater position to suceed. :pimp |

Experience, knowledge and talent can be bought, Playboy bought well, but you need to know what to buy. :winkwink: |
It really comes down to marketing, in a lot of cases (depending on what you're doing) the surfers don't care if you have some fancy site, the biggest part is getting them there and making it easy for them to understand what you're selling them. The only time you're going to need $50k to start up is if you don't know how to do anything yourself.

any site ( decent enough ) can make money if you have TRAFFIC!

as long as people are buying content or hiring shooters, who gives a fuck.... |
I think it is a combination of several factors. A good idea, or niche, and then getting quality unique content of that niche, because without a quality product you have no chance of long term success. You may make some dollars in the short run, but not for the long haul, and that is where the real money is. second, you need deep pockets to build up the content, the site the marketing, you have to have a large enough bank roll to get you over the hump. In the beginning you will be spending far more that you will be taking in. This is where most companies fail, they may have the content right, but they run out of cash to promote it and build it up. finally dedication to stick with the program, and put in the 10-12 hour days it takes to build a site
