Im moving and have to switch to DSL internet, is it any good?
I use cox for my internet right and Im going to have to make a switch to DSL cable, is DSL any good in San Diego?
|
A better question is 'How far am I from the CO, and how fast can I get my DSL.'
Cable, for all of it's issues is always faster. I've done SDSL, ADSL, even fucking IDSL (that sucked), but cable is your friend. |
dial up is better...
|
Go with cable..dsl is ok but I'm disappointed compared to the stats I've seen
|
Im freaking out because i did not even think about this, I need my fast internet.
|
Does anybody on here use DSL cable?
|
i wouldn't call DSL a broadband, it's just faster than dialup
check if you get FIOS in your area |
what is DSL cable? lol
see if you can get verizon fios |
dsl is limited in the connection speed, cable is not
while you will constantly see cable rising in the transfer speeds the upcoming years, dsl will pretty much always be staying the same |
not to mention you have to use your phone line for the connection, and we all know how great that 2 wire phone cable is....LOL
|
I've had both cable and DSL
several issues can come into play with both.. cable: if you live in a neighborhood where everyone has cable tv/net (phone now too in some areas) it can really slow down your speed DSL: your speed will really be dependant on how far away from a main switching station you are..closer the better, but you can actually get a more consistant speed with DSL..at least thats my experience..what you will find is download speeds are pretty similar..upload speeds are somewhat slower. I wouldnt worry about it too much if you can locate yourself fairly close (within 1 mile or so) to the switching station you'll be ok. I do have to say I've had more uptime with my DSL than I did with my cable connection, seemed at least once a week my cable (time warner - road runner) net would go down for like an hour or more..and that sucked. Be wary of what the DSL salesperson tells you about speed, they really are just guessing for the most part..what I found is that the guys in the field that do the installs are the ones that really know the truth about what you will get speed wise in the area you are moving to..find one of those guys out on the street or whereever and they will tell you straight. good luck! |

it can go both ways with cable or dsl with dsl, I had more drop outs than a inner new york public school the speed thing with cable and highly populated area is true, but you have to be talking about a city block full of people using cable, a normal neighborhood is not going to effect you all that much unless every single person has cable and jumps on at the exact same time |
I am using DSL - beter than modem :) He He.
|
dsl is good, i found cable to have alittle less uptime.

the physical cable that provides users with the dsl service (phone line) can only handle so much, and eventually they won't be able to provide anything faster because the line will be "tapped out" when I first got comcast back 4 years ago I was happy to get 200kb/sec downloads, I now have an average of 700kb/sec downloads, I am often downloading at speeds close to 1500kb/sec....my upstream has even increased from 30kb/sec to 50kb/sec...I wish they would work on that more |

comcast is working in my area right now to upgrade our speeds yet again, I can't wait to see what they roll out next |
I have 6mbps cable which I like. I just can't wait for the speed to increase more like 8 to 10mbps.
|
Here dsl is very stable "speed wise" compared to cable.
|
DSL = Distance Sensitive and just a dying technology overall im my opinion.
The Telco's are all looking to deliver IPTV ( Internet Television ) to the home market as the next big revenue maker.... FIOS is the way for this to make the high speed dedicated connectivity possible with Qos ( Quality of service ) for voice, video and data over 1 link to your house ... 30megs is the starting offer for Verizon here, I'll switch the day they offer it to my area, I cant wait. Check out if the new place has cable or ideally, FIOS and get that, You'll be much happier. |
of course DSL is alway fast than any other dial up...

DSL sucks avoid it if you can.
|
Qwest DSL is the best I can get here. 7mbit down, 3mbit up :)
|
I've used speakeasy's dark dsl in the past and its pretty good. they'll even give you multiple IP's on a residential account.
I dont know if they have their own network now, but when I was using them a few years ago they were reselling covad. but with all those things you dont usually get from covad, like customer service and installation within 3 months of your order.... |
I like DSL a lot better than cable. It was more reliable for me; it's not available where I live now.
|
Cable sucks, you should run Fiber to your house like I just did :thumbsup Or atleast DSL.

DSL is good if you're near it's source. Speed wise it's more constant. Cable is faster but not constant speed.
|
dsl isnt that bad..
|
fuck dsl, get cable its much better :)
|
my cable is 10 times faster then dirty dsl
and cheaper |
I have 16mbit DSL ..cable internet is much slower where I love...
