Computer Tech's In Here Please

My wife has goten a trojan and I can't find it. Once she boots IE, it shuts it self down. She can't surf the web, etc. I've run CW Shredder, and Malware Bouncer, but no cigar.

Anyone run into this one?

chupachups 09-21-2006 04:39 PM

Interesting question, could be I am a Computer Doctor who has learned that when he does not know something, ask?

GrouchyAdmin 09-21-2006 04:48 PM

This isn't quite the right forum for this kind of stuff - but..

Boot up in safe mode after installing Microsoft Defender, Ad-Aware, AVG, and the free ewido trial. One of those fuckers will get it.

You should also learn about HiJackThis.

madawgz 09-21-2006 04:54 PM

got that virus from P2P software?

Haven't used that stuff since that free music one what was it, oh yea, Naptser.:upsidedow

By the way I use FireFox

Thanks for the highjack one, had it and used it, but forgot to say so.

tranza 09-21-2006 04:59 PM

Good luck dude, here's a bump for you.

jelf 09-21-2006 05:01 PM

Shouldnt keep to much on your computers main drive so I would just do a fresh install which will only take like 40 mins and bam

inabon 09-21-2006 05:07 PM

are those the only antivirus you have?

Spunky 09-21-2006 05:10 PM

Did you run you antispyware in safe mode? I found those free programs ineffective I use Bullit proof and trend micro and it seems to be working fine

micker 09-21-2006 05:31 PM

you may also want to try a rootkit scanner if the antivirus doesnt find anything. there are a few good ones out there that are free..

try this one...

johnny o 09-21-2006 05:35 PM

squishypimp 09-21-2006 05:35 PM

do you have norton or mcafee?

u-Bob 09-21-2006 05:58 PM

format and reinstall... (may seem like overkill but it's the only way to be 100% sure)

What antivirus do you have ?, does the antivirus find the trojan ? yada yada

generally if its a W32 Trojan there are quite difficult to remove and a reformat sometimes is needed.

mandrake 09-21-2006 06:10 PM

try nortons corp...work well

hey compy, I remember you from tla's board, old school!!

http://forums.tomcoyote.org/
they have awesome gurus there, do a hijack this scan and post it on there, I would put money on them findng the solution )) good luck, I have my own hijacking trojan malware beast I cant remove off my notebook, but working on it.

ner0 09-21-2006 06:27 PM

Buy NOD32 - the best anti virus you can get. You will NOT get viruses if you use this. You'll love having no slowdowns on your machine too :thumbsup

Spyware scanners I use are Microsoft Defender, Adaware (lavasoft.de) and Spybot (google it)

If you're gonna browse through a lot of porn sites I would not recommend using IE. Install firefox and never get spyware again.

Hijack This! (google it) is a great util for removing things in your registry that are set to auto start on bootup (viruses, spyware, some legit programs)

fallenmuffin 09-21-2006 06:27 PM

Run an anti-virus / spyware remover...

when it shuts down does it give a window before it does, and that windows says "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM"?

I just got that too if so, I am formatting as I type this

Compdoctor 09-21-2006 06:34 PM

I've tried all of the above, and some tricks I know. Nothing. Guess its a new one, and I am going to have to reformat her machine and reinstall. If your married, you know how well that is going to go over. Honey, your infected:)

Compdoctor 09-21-2006 06:35 PM

ok imafuckingaussie thanks, I am going there now, but I think its a new thing!

micker 09-21-2006 06:38 PM

compdoctor, exactly what is it doing? Is Internet explorer crashing, or is windows crashing?

rodney25 09-21-2006 06:40 PM

That sucks, man. I hate to say this, but I guess you should just reintstall it again.

Project-Shadow 09-21-2006 07:02 PM

not even crashing. IE would begin to boot, and once it gets almost booted it shuts down before completing. Also I have cable so it boots fast. None of the other systems have this so it would have to be something from her e-mails.

Compdoctor 09-21-2006 07:14 PM

you know if you really want to know how I got my name, do a google search for compdoctor, something will come up

wow, with a nick like compdoctor I would have thought you knew that having a fast internet connection doesn't mean your computer gets faster....LOL

You can use CompDoctor. This handy reference tool will make repairing and optimizing your PC easy
you write software to repair and optimize pc's?

Ace_luffy 09-21-2006 07:17 PM

goodluck for trojan

aico 09-21-2006 07:19 PM

People still use IE? Jesus. :Oh crap

PAR 09-21-2006 07:21 PM

a few things come to mind
1- when running windows xp, this problem may occur if you have set Windows and buttons to Windows XP style.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&DisplayLang=en

2- use Mcafee's Stinger to quash to most
popular of viruses and it cleans and repairs
fast. Even with a full scan, I would also run
STINGER:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

But with out some more info on your Comp. cant really help..

Try restoring to a few weeks back see if that helps you out.

Spunky 09-21-2006 07:24 PM

I had something quite similar..It was windows automatic update and my firewall clashing..It would kill my IE..I disabled my firewall and let windows download and it worked fine after that

Compdoctor 09-21-2006 08:10 PM

Nope!!!

never mind its not worth it. I'll just format the thing and reinstall, that will fix anything!! If I do a restore, the trojan or virus will still be there.
