I am never suprised to see how many people buy into the idea that the United States is some sort of moral beacon, a shining light in the world above and beyond any reproach. Esp after Sept 11th. This country is running amok in its new found patriotism. It is putrid. Americans, for the most part, are ignorant. They will believe whatever the idiot box tells them. Everyone is a patriot now, everyone is a hero. Yet give them a basic test on American history, and they will fail. People are so proud these days, yet they have no idea what they are even proud of. Morons.

This country doesnt know its ass from a hole in the ground. One minute special interest groups are shredding apart and rewriting history books to include a more lefty friendly curriculum, turning what were once heroes into genocidal maniacs. Columbus is now akin to Hitler. Thomas Jefferson, slave owning wife beater. All white men prior to 1970 are propped up as misogynist and racist... yet now post Sept 11 we are supposed to be a proud wonderous nation of people dedicated to making the world a better place. Which is it? Make up your fucking minds.

The average ignorant American does not deserve to live. They merely exist and thrive on the work of others. Very few people work to make this country a great place, the rest of you were just fortunate to have your ignorant asses born here... and you live your life oblivious to the world around you or your place in it. Most of you are a waste of fucking space.

So stuff another cheeseburger in your mouth, salute the flag, and get all teary eyed at the Star Spangled Banner... you are an American damnit. Oblivious to your ignorance you will stumble through life following the whims of the puppetmasters that control you.

I never really payed much attention to the old saying "Ignorance is bliss" when I was younger, but its true. More true than I ever could have imagined. And Americans are the prime example.

This post, as are many of your posts, is harsh but contains alot of truth.

Polls have shown that the average American seldom reads a news paper, watches a news program, or reads a book of import.

The people on the street interviews that are conducted by some of the local TV news shows, from time to time, never cease to amaze me at how uninformed Americans are about their own history, let alone world events.

One of the most recent one of these that I saw was about Richard Nixon and Watergate. There were about a dozen people that did not have a clue who Richard Nixon was and had never heard of Watergate.

One of the most amusing that I saw was; people were being asked who the first American woman astronaut was. One female responded by saying it was a trick question because we do not have female astronauts. When she was informed of the correct answer and was told that we have had several women astronauts since then, she said she hoped that her father didn't see the interview, because she was a third year student at Harvard.

The reason why American's don't know about world events is because they just plain don't matter. When you live in the US, all the matters is the US. That's the way it is here, and it's a very good thing. World events being reported on TV is nothing more than entertainment to us. Unless it involves the oil in the middle east, nothing going on in other countries effects us.

American history..... Not necessary for us be bothered with knowing the details. Really none of it plays a role these days. I can see how in other countries things happen 50 years ago, and it's still effecting them. It's not like that here.

The USA is unlike every other country. We don't need anyone else either (except, like I say, the ME for their oil).

Anyone who doesn't live here needs to move here asap.

Incorrect.

You are not a very "informed" person, are you?

Your stock markets and economy are dependent on trade.
Export and import are two very important things for any trade friendly nation.

When the economy in Japan or Europe goes down, you will feel it too - just look at the US stock markets.

Did you know that the European Union is the largest investor in US businesses?

It's sad but there are not too many bright people here or there in the world, and as a whole it is getting dumber and dumber as more and more things come out of the US.

Rap music, homeboy behavior and the ?I'll sue everyone? attitudes have spread around the world like Britney's fake nude shots.

Society was nice, tolerant and forgiving when I grew up. Sadly there is none of that around anymore anywhere.

You can't walk the streets at night because you might get killed for your shoes. You can't walk the streets during the day because you might get sued for looking at someone the wrong way or for opening the door for a woman. Forget about owning and running a business, the insurance premiums are beyond a joke due to false insurance claims by people who make a living from it. And lastly, everything on TV, Radio or in the movies contains violence and explicit language or lyrics.

I don?t know what any of you are winging about with your lack of patriotism? I just know that the US has fucked my quality of life in more that one way and patriotism or history education should be the last items on your list of things to fix.

We have to wonder about this importance of the oil for actual use in the US. It seems like so many sources of news report the US is only buying 7% of mideast oil to use here. So we are worried about alllll the other countries needs. Odds are we could make up that 7% fairly easily from some other source like South America or stateside.

But the rich oil people would whine about losing their billions so I guess us ignoring that oil thing wouldn't work. :1orglaugh

wads it really nice and tolerant or did it just seem that way? Remember, in the "good old days" there weren't 24 hour news channels, the internet, etc. for information to get out...in those days, you beat your wife and children and stuck your retarded kids in the basement and no one said a thing....

while there is way too much ignorance running amok these days, is the average american really any more ignorant than when there was only one or two news anchors everyone listened to? I thinki ignorance has been around for a long time, it just didn't get any play on the nightly news ;)

That really intressting AND WRONG! Try a for example to build a car without an engine because most of them are made in Germany.

What I realy hate Americans which think they are the best. They want every country to speak there language but dont want to learn someone else language. Most technology is from germany too. Can you Americans buy a coke with an cellphone? In germany you can. Or did you Americans heard from UMTS? That a technolgy that will be all over in germany in 2 years. With it you can watch TV, go in the Internet, listen to a radio, and much more with a cellphone!!!

I went now for 2 years to school in the US and have an 4.0 GPA and in Germany my GPA was 1.9 because in germany you learn more.

Can an american tell me only one thing that is better in US than in germany? :)

Ps: I know my english is not the best but think about that: I'm better with that english in school than most americans with good english :1orglaugh

The way I understand some of it is e-cash that you download through your cell onto a debit or credit card. Then use the e-cash for small transactions. GSM phones only I believe. The GSM network in the US is just starting to get really rolling. TDMA is gonna be dragging it down for a long time.

For those who are bashing America, you may want to reconsider. When your country is hopelessly being taken over by another superpower, who will jump to your aid, USA. What country most primes the WORLD economy, USA. We as a people are far from perfect. We as a group have our imperfections, as do the people of every other nation in the world.

I honestly think that the people who are bashing the USA are naive to our way of life. If you lived "our" life, you would never go back to "your" life. As all other major players in the world, we have our enemies, our political imperfections, and our social problems, one of which is that we care to damn much about the individuals outside our borders, which is an extremely unique characteristic of an economical cornerstone to the world economy.

Somebody said it above, we were damn lucky to be born here. And for those who dislike "us", don't ever run here when you are seeking political asylum, don't ever vacation here and for goodness sake, quit working for the American dollar.

I think it is ridiculous to say that Americans weren't patriotic before Sept. 11. Let us kill 5000 of your citizens and see if your country pulls together for a cause just a tad.

And, oh yeah, Go Fuck Yourself!!

FATPad 06-26-2002 10:33 AM

I do agree to a point. Americans are fairly self centered and ignorant.

I can't speak any other languages beside English. I give bigtime credit to people who can speak multiple languages. With the way the world is going, I think we should start teaching our children other languages at an early age.

I also agree that some of the technology is pointless or frivolous. Sort of, "I'm doing this because I can, not because it's of any use". I can already call my bank and transfer funds from one account to another. That's not really a major breakthrough IMO.

And yes...we've always been ignorant and done really crappy things...but now it does get reported more. That's all.

All in all, I'd rather live here, than in another country with my only desire to move to America to finish my education or get a better life for my family.

One question...if we are so bad, and everyone else so advanced, why DOES everyone come here for their education or to improve their standard of living?

not everyone does. :winkwink:

you should see the india to england flights at manchester airport... holy fuck, everytime, it is like a mass pilgrimage.

one reason for immigrating to america is because of glamourisation by the movie theatres.

another... usa is a HUGE country, and there has to be opportunity in there somewhere. you can fit a lot of people into the usa. nobody wants to move from a tiny crowded country, to another tiny crowded country.

usa is a place where a person can smoke for 30 years, ingnore doctors' warnings, develop lung cancer, then sue the cigarette manufacturers for a billion dollars.

of course, it is only natural that cubans or mexicans may come to the usa, just the same as a lot of immigrants from europe go to germany or france or the uk.

you've got to also consider that the usa is cheaper than most, if not all, european countries. not all immigrants can afford to live well in europe, but it is much easier in the usa. take this, for example:

1 litre of petrol, or "gas"
UK Price: £0.82 (£0.62 tax)
USA Price: £0.26 (£0.06 tax)

insane. i for one am planning to move out to the costa blanca, as are a few of my friends.

Pathfinder - I dare say the polls do exist but I haven't seen them.
I think the average Brits knowledge of History is perhaps a little better and world events a lot better. However I also agree that the world in general is becoming a dumber place in many respects. The people with a little intelligence - either natural or through good education - continue to grow more intelligent, but the idiots and scumbags of the world continue to breed in far higher numbers than those of the not so ignorant. I'd imagine that the dumb in the UK are at least as dumb as those in the US about most things, although not so insular i.e. they have a basic grasp of some world events.

Tony is a very intelligent man I think and has some of the best spin doctors about. However he often scares me almost as much as Bush. There's a lot of shit he gets made law that people aren't even aware of and it's mostly real scary 'Big Brother is watching' type crap. Bush scares me because he seems to be a power hungry meglomaniac who's not as bright as he could be. Blair scares me because he seems also power hungry but far more devious and intelligent (a bad thing because he usually gets away with it due to this). Mind you I distrust most politicians by default... :)

"We've reversed natural selection". Funny. Instead of survival of the fittest we now have survival of the dumbest.

drunkmonkey 06-26-2002 07:21 PM

People are people no matter where you go. American's think we are the moral beacon of the world? So does everybody else. If I am not correct, I do believe that we were attacked recently by a group of people that thought THEY were the moral beacons of the world. It sounds like alot of the anti-american speech here is no more than people shining their moral beacons themselves.

To claim that American's thrive and exist soley on the work of others is true. Einstein himself said he was only considered a genius because he stood on the shoulders of giants. All of his work was based on the existance of others peoples work. Everyone's is.

People are people no matter where you go.

I fail to believe that the rest of the world is so much more enlightened.

The analogy of sports comes to mind in this matter. Arguably, America is the top nation in many catagories. Just like in sports, people aim to defeat the best team. Americans are targeted by everyone in the world arena because everyone wants to be top dog.
