Why do some registrars charge $10 and others $35 for a domain?
 

How is it that some registars can charge, $8, $9, $12 etc. for registering a domain (regular price, not a special) and then others like networksolutions, register.com etc. charge $35?

Registrars that charge $8/domain are new age registrars who are up to date with the current market. The registrars that charge $35/domain are dinosaurs that have already based their business model on that pricing structure. To lower their price would mean they'd have to redo their entire infrastructure.

The damn Indian that runs the store here wants $1 for a can of coke. Why?

SomeCreep hit it on the head and also they can. Newbies that don't know anything and some how land on the dinosaur page are willing to pay $45/yr or even $17/MO for a domain because they don't know any better.

I had a client paying me $100/mo for $9 vitural hosting and $23/mo for a domain name in 2002 :/ people just don't know man.

That's basically it? I know zero about the domain business.. Is there some base (wholesale) cost for domains?

When I first started buying domains in 2000, I started out with register.com but quickly moved to networksolutions. Then I moved to bulkregister and now namecheap.. So I keep wondering if I should move the older domains over to my cheaper registrars.
