Apple laptop

anyone got one of those newish apple laptops with the 15" widescreen.... I was quite impressed for a travel machine but I've never used an apple before so I don't know much about them

quiet 06-25-2002 12:45 PM

interesting speakers.

Don't do it! It's not worth it! You have everything to live for! Life isn't that bad! Turn back now before it's too late! Think of the wife and kids! etc....

quiet 06-25-2002 12:51 PM

they're harman kardon's - good enough for video editing...

i've got the g4 667, with 512mb of ram...great
box. beats the shit out of the thinkpad i was using. features that i like:

vga and svid out: dual head to tv or other monitor(i have a sony 21").

2 usb, 1 fw: i have a fw burner, works just fine, and fast. usb speakers(sound sticks as
above), i use a boomslang razor usb mouse,
scroll wheel works fine, and yes you can right click.

screen is great....the only thing i'm pissed about is that 2 weeks after i bought mine,
they made the internal cd a combo drive, meaning dvd+cdr(w). but i have an external burner, so its not too big a deal.

and i've got lots of nice graphics sw as well..;)

my only real complaint is not enough options
for audio out, though i've got my creative 5.1
system coming out of the headphone jack currently, and the soundsticks are attached
o my wife's ilamp.

NOTE: if you have serial devices like I do(or connect to switches or routers regularly, like i do(via hardline)), then you'll need
to buy a serial to usb converter, cost about $60 for a nice one. I still need to pick one up myself....;)

best purchase i've made in a long, long time. again, best of both worlds, unix+decent gui....

Quite - don't use that sofa too much, when I started I used to do that from my living room on my laptop but my back got all fucked up. Need a nice big comfy back support work chair to get anything done now.

Do you do all your work from that laptop or is it just a travel item? I couldn't imagine working from just a 15" screen all the time, but for travel it's ok. I was very impressed with a widescreen on a laptop, watching a DVD it would make everyone on the plane jealous.

another question - I don't see an external mouse, are you actually able to use that built in pointer thing? I could never work them right on my laptops but they were never apple.........

hahmike 06-25-2002 01:45 PM

isn't that a cordless mouse on the opposite side of the desk as the book? i mean... same side of the picture as the cushion. :D

could be - i thought it was a tv remote and i didn't see anything plugged into the back of the laptop to suggest it was one? I figgured the two cables were power and phone line.

I suppose that would leave a question as to where the speakers are plugged in too?

SD: I use it for work. I have itunes/icq/jabber/email/etc on the lcd,
and mozilla, ie, golive and photoshop on
the 21".

builtin track pad thingie is handy, but i only
use it when i'm in travel mode, at home i use
a 5 button boomslang usb razor. however
you can use pretty much any usb mouse out
there, though i've not figured out a way
to program the 2 side buttons on the boomslang yet. buddy of mine uses
one of those M$ explorer optical mice, works
just fine...scroll wheel and all.

soundsticks are usb, i normally use a usb
4 port hub if i'm going to use more than
the 2 builtins...

I have a *friend who uses those machines with a firewire 180 gig and a viacom drawing pad/pen tool with optical mouse, and can do professional design from anywhere and work on audio weighing no less than 900 megs all at the same time and be sipping a Corona from the beach.

Mac rules.

i have an office where myself and the others that work for me do most things. i don't have a problem using the pointer, but i also use a mouse. i have larger screen at the office - http://www.apple.com/ca/displays/acd23/

i run wireless internet http://www.apple.com/ca/airport/ at home and at the office. the wires are for power, and the speaker system.

yes, it's great for watching dvd's on the plane. i travel a lot :) actually, i'm heading to NY on the 27th...

i've got a half a dozen 180 gig fw drives - uncompressed dv takes up a lot of room :)

Thanks for the info - very informative and a strong reference.

I saw those larger screens for apples and cried that they weren't available for my machine........ I think might just try that apple laptop.......

Definitely. Although I do graphics here, my main thing is Audio... so as you of course know, it must be Mac, Digidesign, Pro Tools on dual G4s with Studi Display. Mmm I love those fucking things.... god damn I get excited thinking about em...

Sure beats my old Performas back in the day hahaha

toddler 06-25-2002 02:28 PM

feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, or on the initial setup of
things ... can also kick over some sw...

highly recommend wireless. i've been wireless for the last 2.5 years, and its the best
thing i've done for my productivity. don't have
to hang out in the office to work, can go outside, sit on the toilet, whatever. (the look
on my mother-in-law's face when she was over one day..."did he just take his laptop into the bathroom?" lol)
