Any statistic on how many internet users are still on dialup?

My sales are a little low this month and I'm thinking it may be because my pages are a too heavy.

FATPad 06-24-2002 09:05 PM

80% to 90% I think?

Marcus 06-24-2002 09:07 PM

wow that much huh?
dialup has spoiled me

AdultWire 06-24-2002 09:53 PM

Haha.. I don't bother considering anyone on dialup -- they're cheap.

marty 06-24-2002 09:54 PM

they like AOL, they don't have to know what pppoe is or smtp
god i hope i never have to suffer dialup again

AdultWire 06-24-2002 10:51 PM

They shouldn't have to know that stuff anyways... but AOL is a pretty strong marketing force... agreed.

kronic 06-24-2002 10:54 PM

Heard it tonight on cnn. 79% still use dialup. Shocked the hell out of me. Thought it would be WAY lower by now.

Pornwolf 06-24-2002 11:00 PM

I'm willing to bet that the other 21% that are on broadband account for up to 70% of all sales.

JoeA 06-25-2002 04:15 AM

In the UK Broadband has only just started to take off this year due to costs..

It used to cost US$300 to be set up and around US$75 a month. Since Jan and the new modems for DSL it costs around US$100 for the modem and no special new phone lines and only US$45 a month..

What heaven to get speeds of 56k when downloading and updating sites now takes minutes. I used to see programmes of 5 - 6 mb and try to download them and gave up after 45 mins .. Now in 5 minutes I have them..

The only problem will be that when more and more IP's offer broadband and surfers take it up then it will slow down again. Make the best of it while we're the minority.

It's hard for broadband to take off when all the providers keep going out of business (northpoint, covad, @home). Hopefully the regional bells and the wifi folks will turn things around.

I don't know. But I have broadband and don't use AOL and have no idea what pppoe is.

I have been on the net for a hell of a long time, and on broadband for the past 5 years, and I don't know what pppoe is either.

(oh, and last report I heard about Canadians was that "50% of homes in Canada currently have broadband") No, That is not have access to, since that number is a lot higher.

goddamn broadband providers arent marketing their product properly!!

all they need to do is say "download porn 100x faster with our new DSL/Cable options!" and they will have a flood of new clients..

by now the outside industries should know one thing, sex fucking sells.

all idiots!

pppoe is shit. The DSL provider in my area uses it (thank god I ditched them for cable). Basically with PPPoE, you click on a button to connect and there are idle time limits I believe.

salsbury 06-25-2002 09:16 AM

believe it or not, even broadband users benefit if you thin your site down some. they get a faster response (which is probably why they got broadband in the first place - that and to download large files (note: downloading from visiting web pages - they are seperate activities for users.))

Paul Markham 06-25-2002 09:23 AM

I can't get anything but dial up in our home. There is no cable in the street and a high rise apartment is between us and the arial transmitting micro wave.:-((

So slow, any work we do here we take to the office on disc in the morning.

DrGuile 06-25-2002 05:23 PM

PPPoE = PPP over Ethernet

PPP = point to point protocol

cold_ice 06-25-2002 06:19 PM

hey us dial up people are not cheap were just broke ass muthers

BrettJ 06-25-2002 06:28 PM

sorry cold ice -

you can't be that broke.

your site looks pretty good - i assume you have to approve galleries. having to do that on modem is going to take you at least 3x's as long. so that's at least an hour ever day that you could save yourself - do something more effective - like traffic trade - or swap out advertisers.

You Have to Upgrade to cable/dsl - no webmasters - should have to be on modem any more.

contact me on icq - let's see what we can do...

BrettJ 06-25-2002 06:28 PM

icq 99463509 or 9123759
