Bonne St-Jean Baptiste !

HI,

Today there's a big hollyday in Quebec. It's called St-Jean Baptiste (similar to the 4th of July in USA). There are fireworks everywhere and people get drunk:drinkup

(in French)

Bonne St-Jean à tous les Québécois et Québécoises :GFYBand

Pipecrew 06-24-2002 06:18 PM

You guys gonna hurry up and seperate from us or what? :glugglug

TSB 06-24-2002 06:20 PM

Nahhhhhh :)

I am Canadian :thumbsup

Evil Chris 06-24-2002 08:24 PM

Good for you TSB... :thumbsup

But ask any Quebecer what and why they are celebrating every June 24th, and what will the typical answer be?
:warning

Ray@TastyDollars 06-24-2002 08:32 PM

To get piss drunk.

Bonne St-Jean TSB

Later
Ray

julia 06-24-2002 08:41 PM

bonne st-jean!

TSB 06-24-2002 08:52 PM

Don't worry guys, Quebec won't separate from Canada.

There's a big change in the electoral thrend. Our next Prime Minister won't be a separatist. Right now it seems that Mario Dumont (a 32 years old) might win the next election.

For those who are interested in the Quebec political scene, there's a good bulletin board (in French) where you can fight the separatists...

http://www.politiquebec.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

(my nickname on this french board is Mario Bros.)

Canada is here to stay :stoned

Bonne fete ,TSB..

Yes,EC,I know what you mean.Attitudes seem to be changing but it's not easy to forget several decades of being treated like shit because I speak french with an anglo accent.
To so many, many of us "le fete national" will always be a racist event and the Quebec flag a symbol of bigotry .
No hard feelings TSB,best wishes to "vous autres" anyway.

the indigo 06-25-2002 01:09 AM

Yeah and it's not easy to forget how bad the Canada fucked us and how much tax we pay them for... nothing!

La St-Jean is mostly a culture thing, not political anyway. Since I live in MTL, almost all the talks I hear are in english... that's pretty sad.

Fletch XXX 06-25-2002 01:13 AM

Does this have anything to do with the drunk John The Baptist who was robbed of his doctrine? The John whos real name was John Christ, whom Jesus Christ stole his title and words upon his beheading and started his own thing?

Nah could be,... hahaha

Even Rene Levesque said that Quebec got more $$$ from Canada then it gave. Why did he lie????
The fete national is the MOST political event there is,if that isn't very self evident to you, there is nothing much that I can say on the matter.
For over 200 years Montreal has been about half French and half English. If it makes you "pretty sad" to hear people speaking English, then I'll tell you the same thing I would tell some one who doesn't like to hear people speak French.GO LIVE SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I find it "pretty sad " that in a so-called well educated ,modern society ,people still get upset to hear people speak another lanquage.
Will the human race NEVER learn????

Few times I have gone to Quebec I did n't even get served in a store because I didn't speak french and spoke English (western) .
Now Its not like I'm from England but I'm from Vancouver Canada.Even in my own fuckin goddam country I was treated this way. Isn't English the primary language in Canada ? Last time I checked it was. very sad.
Should have seen the old French hags face when I told her where to go and how fast to get there. ... priceless.

julia 06-25-2002 11:09 AM

I don't like when poeple are trying to make a political mess of something like St-Jean!! It buggs the shit out of me! Everybody is right, things are messy and no one has the vision of it as a whole. No one knows every details of every little thing that happened between Canada and Quebec.
I live in Montreal and I am a quebecoise but I don't shit on the rest of Canada... I lived in BC for 3 years and some people were rude to me when they heard my french accent, they even told me to go back to Quebec and all but in general poeple were nice to me. This happened in Toronto also! So if you were treated badly in Quebec maybe you didn't go to the right place but FYI Montreal is 50% french 50% english. I was treated VERY badly in a lot of places in Canada and I am not anti-canadians!
Shady: the way you speak about quebecquers is the reason why so many of them wants out, let me tell ya that people like you in Vancouver were treating me like shit, isn't french the second OFFICIAL language in Canada? Sad! very sad! You sound like one of those racist I met there!

DrGuile 06-25-2002 11:12 AM

lol, you guys are funny as shit.

I went to the Mont-Royal park last night.

half the people were from different 'ethnicities' and nobody gived a fuck.

Everybody was just celebrating the fact that Quebec is a damn nice place to live

about being "dissed" for speaking english, thats BS... also, try talking french in Alberta...

also, the "main" language in Canada is French AND English... in theory anyway...

julia 06-25-2002 11:19 AM

exactly what I was trying to say! It's all BS and everybody likes everybody here in Montreal!
Cheers

mijoon 06-25-2002 11:52 AM

Bonjour Julia,
It really makes me sick to hear how you were treated. If anyone thinks that you are exaggerating let me say as an anglo that you are not.I have seen many such incedents and it is disgusting.
Hearing stories like that ,it should not suprise people that there are some Quebecois who want to seperate. It is suprising that there are not many, many more!
Montreal is such an incredable city , almost everyone is bilingual and maybe 50% speak three or more languages. It is sad that a tiny minority (both english and french) try to ruin it.
I hope that no one thinks my remarks on the fete national were meant to be anti-french.They were not.My point was that the fete was used for so many years ,by certain people , to promote divisions between the various people of Montreal.Thankfuly that seems to be changing, especially this year. I hope that someday the fete really will be for all quebecers and the cloud of suspicion will leave...It just takes a little time.
Shady.... "The old FRENCH hag"????I think that tells us a lot about you!!!!
Boy, the americans must find this thread fasinating...
:NopeNope :sleep :sleep

julia 06-25-2002 12:20 PM

"Boy, the americans must find this thread fasinating... "

LOL

I see your point and hope the same! :drinkup

Well-said ! I know a lot of people who lives in montreal and speaks only english without any problems at all...Since I live in a small suburban (about 20 minutes from MTL) most of the people in here speaks french only, but still if you want to be hired to work with the public anywhere, you have to be bilingual!
The good thing though is that St-Jean Baptiste last 4 days in my town since there is a music festival at the same time.... in other words I was drunk for the past 4 days and had a lof of fun :Graucho
Quebec is a damn nice place to be!

Doc , just telling a true experience. Thats all.

Julia, no racism here.Always have to use that as a defence.Thats what makes me sick.

I have French Canadian relatives and they know experiences I have had and they agree. It happens. I won't lose sleep over it , trust me.

You can be french and travel anywhere in Canada and be treated like shit. Fuck, I know that. It happens. Don't lose sleep over it Julia.

Personally , I love Montreal.Has the best night life in Canada, hands down. Sir Winnies baby ! Love that place.

Also French women are the best in bed and thats something Quebec should be very, very proud of!

And you are correct , French is the second official language of Canada.

julia 06-25-2002 02:19 PM

It just sounds to me like you were losing sleep over it!!
Anyways, I hate all that political bullshit and we should all get along to show the good exemple! :)

Wow! So many people from Montreal here.

J'habite dans Ahuntsic à Montreal :thumbsup

On devrait aller prendre une bière ensemble une bonne fois.

I don't know why, but I always thought I was all alone here! LOL. There isn't a single adult webmaster forum or ressource in french here, and the only one I found in french was located in France and it sucked. :)

I know that GammaCash is located in Ville Saint-Laurent, I might send my resume in the future.. hehe.
