Vitamins!!! Fact or Fiction?

I know my diet isnt the best in the world and Im trying hard to make proper choices.

So is taking Vitamins a good idea to make up for a somewhat poor diet?

Dio they do anything? Are they placebo's? Which Brand is good? Is there a difference?

Can you recomend a good complete Vitamin?

My brain beelds with all the information on the net and I wish someone would break it down for me.

Most vitamins are kosher if they are of the normal type. Some of the odd ones and such are only hypothetical. Your daily vitamin requirement vitamins are what you should be after. Most of those can be found in one good multi vitamin. Tons of brands to choose from. I prefer the ones Wallgreens has, just because they are cheaper than most and come in larger bottles.

also, dont take too many minerals. they can build up and cause kidney stones!

i personaly love b-group!
b6 puts me in a better mood. when i am angry or upset i pop one.
b1 helps relax me right before bedtime :)
(of course this is like 500-2k percent of the rda)

fuzzylogic 09-14-2006 02:07 PM

another thing. vitamins are not regulated. so lead and other bad things might end up in them. one never knows. therefore, i don't repeat brands back to back.

just like fish. don't eat the same fish every week.

Damian_Maxcash 09-14-2006 02:08 PM

I take Berroca - I dont know if they have it in the States?

Its in a drink form as well - and that helps you absorb all the stuff it is packed with.

carol.prime 09-14-2006 02:14 PM

I only take Ferrous Sulfate and Ascorbic Acid.

The trick is that you need to take them 3 times a day. One in the morning, noon and at night. People think if they pop 1 multi-vitamin in the morning that they are set for the day. They have pissed it all out by lunchtime.

100% of the recommend daily allowence (RDA) is what the govrn't thinks is the amount of a vitamin or mineral that u should take. look at the lable on any food product in your house.

with b-vitamins i dont take 100% of the RDA. I take 500-2000%.

Yes though I also prolly have a way different diet and such than you.

I take the following.
3 chewable fruit flavored multi-vitamins, 1 in morning, 2 at night.
1 15mg zinc tablet.
1 cranberry juice extract pill (UTI issues).
2 500mg vitamin C chewables (helps with my iron absorbtion)
1 folic acid (again iron related issues)
1 350mg iron sulfate tablet. (not recomended for anyone unless told to by a doctor. Iron poisoning is possible for most, and specially children. Many people do need some iron and are partially iron deficient, check your multi or try a very small dosage - 10mg or so)

Fiance takes:
Multi
Q-10
Fish oil
and a few others I can not recall off top of my head. My doctor reccomender her a list of vitamins to take instead of giving her a script for an anti-depresant. He said most people with mild depression respond better to this vitamin cocktail than anti depressants and without the side effects. Worked for her.

Roids man.... plenty of roids :winkwink:

I always make sure to eat lots of protien and drink protien shakes and eat lots of food and workout 4-5 times a week. I have been lifting for about 6 years now. It took a while to gain mass. I weighed about 175 in 2000.... i'm 205-210 now ... my optimal weight is around 185. thanks for the compliment. If you really want to get big, ya gotta eat, eat and eat some more.

reynold 09-14-2006 06:45 PM

Try Centrum. It's a multi-vitamin supplement. :thumbsup

Drake 09-14-2006 06:51 PM

Good question. I think that I eat well. I don't take any vitamins. When I was a kid my parents gave me vitamin pills (Flinstones) and cod liver oil tablets. Is any of it necessary?

thebossxxx 09-14-2006 07:43 PM

vitamins and minerals regulate the functioning of almost every system and organ in your body. getting the RDA of vitamins and minerals day in and day out is actually quite difficult unless your meals are well planned to do so. there are no super foods with everything you need. most foods (any vegetable for example) might have a lot of 1-2 of a particular vitamin and no significant amount of any other.

A multi vitamin is a good, healthy thing to take everyday or even twice a day. there is not a huge difference between vitamins... i would just buy a Centrum multi vitamin or some well known brand. if you are exercising a lot, then you need to take a look at your diet and any additional requirements you might have, particularly with minerals like calcium for example.

everyday... i go to the gym and lift and do cardio now. getting back into my old routine.. here is what i take daily

multi vitamin
flax seed oil
calcium
vitamin c
iron
b complex
anti oxidents
glucosomine
amino's
glutamine
protein of course
oh... and roids

E$_manager 09-14-2006 09:31 PM

I think they do something good. At least even if this would be only a believe and it works - good.
Too many vitamins is bad.

Vitasoy 09-14-2006 09:56 PM

I chew on Flintstones :)

Spunky 09-14-2006 10:02 PM

Eat more veggies and fruit and change your diet..pills aren't going to solve it

BT 09-14-2006 10:03 PM

Vitamins in liquid form is the best

Mrs. Lenny2 09-14-2006 10:03 PM

I chew 2 Flintstone's multi-vitamins (almost) every day.

E$_manager 09-14-2006 10:13 PM

I havn't taken vitamins for half a year, but i eat lots of fruits. Still i thinki have to buy some.

spasmo 09-14-2006 10:18 PM

I'm not for taking vitamins, but if you do, try Centrum Silver if you're a healthy male. Same stuff, less iron. You don't need extra iron unless you like crapping tar. (Sorry for the visual)

:2 cents:

chaze 09-14-2006 10:20 PM

You pretty much need vitamans with the way society'd diet is set up now a days.

I take:

centrum
fish extract (omega 3 complex)
something for joints
hodia, green tea
chromium

Yes, I agree. Multi-vitamins help but I don't really recommend them.

Flintstone vitamins are the shit! I loved those things!

CuriousToyBoy 09-16-2006 08:54 PM

Your body rejects excess vitamin and nutrient intake that it is unable to utilize and/or absorb and store - water soluable vitamins are usually excreted in your urine.

Supplements can be helpful, especially if your diet and/or lifestyle dictate that.

It also takes your body between 7-5 days and then CONSISTENT intake to get used to breaking down and absorbing pills.

And wait for the fluroescent yellow piss 3-4 hours later !

;-)

gecko 09-16-2006 09:48 PM

Not really, but I do eat a lot of fruit

Dwreck 09-18-2006 01:34 PM
