You need to go back to old school ICQ ... on my computer at home I think I'm running 2002B ... maybe even an older version than that, can't remember.

Get rid of the original ICQ client and use Gaim, Trilian or Miranda.

But beware, you will loose the ads and the funny games...

Once you have had ICQ, it's hard to go back ...

use icqlite. its never given me any problems.

Trillian is not better

I tried for the last few weeks to get an ICQ number for my girlfriend. The site wouldn't give us one. Half the time you can't get to the signup page, when you can and fill it out correctly, it just takes you back to the home page and doesn't email you anything or give you a number.

I had to buy her one on ebay.

Somebody's going to make a freakin' fortune creating an IM that's truly secure, reliable and supports all the networks. I'd pay big $$ for that.
