Does your site have a registration form? Read it!

You know how users come to your site and pick a username that already exists and then they only find out once they submit the form? Then they have to go back and their fucking password is gone? That loses customers and frustrates them. I got an awesome script that makes it all go away. Check it out on my web site! Go to:

http://baycouples.com

In the registration form - type a username that already exists like ?hotasianpie?. Then continue on to pick your password. See what happens!

If you want me to program it for you ? let me know and I?ll give you a good price.

Yup - I know one of my sponsors changed their page by accident to the type where the user had to choose a non-taken username.. our sales dropped by about 65% as soon as that change was made. :helpme

They changed it back pretty quick :pimp

That WAS indeed stupid. But my script has nothing to do with this. Did you even look at what my script does?

Alky 09-10-2006 03:19 AM

its not exactly hard to repopulate fields...

your script for me had a back button which did javascript.history(-1) (i think)

you want people to pay for this service?

Jace 09-10-2006 03:21 AM

I just did everything you said and nothing happened

flashbang 09-10-2006 03:27 AM

Any decent billing script will check against usernames taken before processing form, you had one that didnt? Bet there's more problems then the username

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. You should really read my original post. Username gets checked ONLY on submit of the form and when people use the back button they loose their password that was typed in twice.

Pretty neat ...

borked 09-10-2006 01:51 PM

simple javascript with a dbase-checking perl backend.

SImple, but effective. No reason to try and sell it on.
It's worth about $0.01 - last I saw this, it was a free script (as in beer - read GNU) distributed with procmail.

Sell it on? Fuck off.

If it would be simple - everybody would have one. But nobody does. Also, after 10 years of intense software development experience it took me 2 full days to get it done.

tical 09-10-2006 06:56 PM

ajax'll do that

It took 2 full days to write a perl script to check whether a table row exists?
In either case live lookups are a bad idea - imagine if I wrote a script to try all the words in a dictionary in 1 second? I suspect a sql core dump would be on the way.... you can't control the number of times a user tries. At least with a POST process, you could say: "User nobody already exists. How about nobody123 etc etc"

Also, you may want to go back and sanitise some user input....
The username
' OR '1'='1
really exists???

I like it. I think those knocking you haven't even checked the page.

The only thing I don't like on the page, is the pop up window about not sending spam.

I know they haven't. They also don't understand how this thing works. Otherwise they wouldn't have posted such dumb comments.
