LEVITTOWN, Pa. - Police in Bucks County have charged 12 women after an investigation into prostitutes who allegedly have been advertising on the Web site Craigslist.


After police received a tip in August about alleged prostitutes advertising on the site, investigators called cell phone numbers in local listings that advertised "GFEs" ? girlfriend experiences ? asking for payment in "ro$e$" or "125 donations."

The undercover investigators agreed to meet the women at motels, and almost all 12 were arrested within two minutes, he said.

Several of the women who were arrested had brought along their boyfriends, and five men were arrested on drug charges, police said.

Similar sting operations have led to prostitution charges against women in states including Maryland, New York, Oregon and New Hampshire.

Craigslist spokeswoman Sue MacTavish Best said the site cooperates with law enforcement and has a flagging system that allows users to bring prohibited content to the company's attention so it can be removed.

New ads suggesting the exchange of sex for money were still popping up on the free classified Web site. And users were warning one another about the police sting earlier this week. Still, other ads under the heading of ?erotica? were taken off the site and marked, ?This posting has been removed by craigslist community.?

A craigslist spokeswoman did not return an e-mail Friday for comment. But the site?s users had plenty of comments ranging from wondering if craigslist should sue police and newspapers that reported the sting for lost revenue and libel to criticizing police for making prostitution arrests instead of investigating violence and drugs.

The police, however, also arrested five people suspected of dealing crack cocaine and heroin during the sting.

The online buzz started mid-afternoon Thursday when a man posted, ?The erotic service section of Craigslist has earned a featured spot on the front page of the Courier Times in Bucks County. A bunch of lucky escorts/hookers from Bensalem were arrested and charged with prostitution.?

But the warning didn?t stop some advertisers: ?Lunch Time Special $100 Quickie ? $100 in and out 30 min.? Another woman offered ?the Lunch of your life? for ?130 roses/hour until 2,? but added that she doesn?t discuss menu and roses over the phone.

Several messages left with advertisers on the site were not returned Friday.

?Seems like a solution is, don?t ever mention any financial transaction, EVER,? one man wrote. ?We need to create a better way to communicate.?

But at least one advertiser thinks she found a way to avoid any legal problems.

?By contacting me (either through phone or email) you agree to these terms and hereby agree that you are not part of any law enforcement agency using this advertisement for entrapment or for arrest,? the transsexual escort posted Friday.

It was unclear Friday afternoon if she had consulted an attorney to determine if the disclaimer would be binding and a phone call to her advertised number was not returned.
