Greenpeace says SEX toys are dangerous

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060908...ndsenvironment

THE HAGUE (AFP) - Environmental group Greenpeace called on the European Union to ban the use of chemical plastic softeners in sex toys because they contained dangerous substances known as phthalates.

"Adult sex toys contain the same toxic substances that the European Union banned from use in children's toys," Greenpeace said in a press release from its international headquarters here.

The environmental group said it was shocked to find that seven of the eight sex toys it had tested contained between 24 and 51 percent of phthalates.

"It is unbelievable that such toxic substances can be used in adult toys. We have tested many products in the last few years but never have we encountered such high concentrations," Greenpeace spokesman Bart van Opzeeland said.

Greenpeace research has shown that phthalates can disrupt the human hormonal system, diminishes fertility and adversely affects the kidneys and liver.

The substance is used to soften plastics and PVC plastic. Greenpeace stressed that a ban on phthalates would not mean the disappearance of people's favourite sex toys as there are plenty of non-toxic alternatives.

SmokeyTheBear 09-09-2006 10:00 AM

well it does say that there are alternative plastics that arent bad .. i was a bit skeptical at first but the chemical has been banned in childrens toys , and sex toys are actually inserted in you.. so it might be good advice..

and it might mean alot of people looking for new sex toys now

Greenpeace were withdrawing money from my account every month for the past 5 years without my permission. They were suppose to debit someone else with the same account number as mine but different routing number. MORONS.... They paid me back + 20% interest:)

sickkittens 09-09-2006 11:12 AM

So does this mean you have to use a condom with your Fleshlight now?

madawgz 09-09-2006 11:38 AM

clip4free 09-09-2006 12:54 PM

Xplicit 09-09-2006 12:58 PM

So do these 'toxins' pose a risk to humans? If so then I guess im on their side.

....Or do they kill fish or some bullshit if people throw it away? and this just some more greenpeace hippy bullshit?

godisdead 09-09-2006 02:42 PM

It's greenpeace hippy bullshit. Like most attempts to save the world by forbidding things you don't like even though you don't have a reason.

minusonebit 09-09-2006 03:25 PM

Not a bad idea I dont think. A broom handle is just as good as most dildos, right? LOL

Pleasurepays 09-09-2006 03:28 PM

they saved the whales and the seals... have nothing else to fight for as their membership base dwindles (and dies off). this is by far, the dumbest and most unlikely idea for a "cause" to bolster their membership and credibility.

They're 100% correct. Some of those cheap plastics smell so toxic they make your eyes water. Think about how absorbent your body's membranes are.

Considering it's against Greenpeace' charter to trim or wash your genitals, I doubt they have much of a chance of penitration actually coming in contact directly with flesh. :thumbsup

Sultry_Selenia 09-09-2006 08:21 PM

If I remember correctly, phthalates were banned in baby and dog toys for a long time - but since adult toys are considered novelties they never got hit with any type of regulations. Other things that this chemical is used in include shower curtains and water bottles (according to Babeland).

I actually wrote up a piece on sex toy materials before and the subject of phthalates came up then as well. Jelly and some types of cyberskin (all the formulas for the various deriviatives are proprietary, so it's hard to tell whether it's just a rumor that phthalates are used in it or not) contain the chemical - so like it was mentioned elsewhere, just use a condom and get rid of the toy if it starts to degrade.

Something is wrong with the world when you have to "condom" your sex toys...

Truth is Smokey - that shit is dangerous and Greenpeace have a valid point.

Used to manufacture toys and the chem processes used to make em needs monitoring. Even on "natural latex" dildos of various kinds - these need leeching in tanks for a long time before chemicals are removed. This sure was not happening in a number of products imported from Asia - can't say for current, it may have improved.

The original test for this involved rubbing a portion of the finished product over the eye of a rabbit - if the rabbit developed blindness or cancerous eyes - the test failed. (Na.. we never harmed any rabbits :winkwink: - there is lab equipment for this test to replicate the same results)

The "acid test" (literally) was leave a product on a shelf for 24 months and if disintegrated - the acid eats the product - there's a problem :winkwink:

Trax 09-09-2006 11:37 PM

it was banned in the eu for kid toys for a reason

Hey, Greenpeace might seem over the top some times but they did great work on many issues..
Also if you had read the article they are not against toys.. they just state some hold too much dangerous weakmaker chemicals.
I think sex toys need proper testing before they are released on the market.

Btw, hippies love toys :1orglaugh

Quickdraw 09-10-2006 09:03 AM

Greenpeace just wants people to use glass sex toys, or a :conehead maybe.

But, if the smell of some of these realistic or soft toys when they come right out of the box is any indication, Greenpeace may have a point. Although, there is still a large group of people sharing sex toys, and that should be of greater concern to most. Either way, I guess use glass or a condom.

I tried finding something about this from sextoy manufacturers, but couldn't find any that talked about toxicity or the like.

Ace_luffy 09-10-2006 09:05 AM

i read a wikipedia thread that mentioned some makers of "jelly rubber" type sex toys advise using them with a condom because of possible heath risks with exposure to the plastics. i read a study on childrens toys made from the same plastics and they said at low levels shouldnt be a risk unless your exposed to the plastic for prolonged periods ( 75 mins a day )

QTbucks_Mark 09-10-2006 09:47 AM

This thread is just another proof, that at least 50% of the people posting on GFY are just idiots who don't even read what they're commenting on before posting their shit. :disgust

Everyone who actually took a few seconds to read the text knows that Greenpeace is doing the right thing this time.

Still even if your resistence is high, the toxic is collecting and turns to some desease.

I think that if you buy something to stick it up your ass you should better double-check what that is yourself. Why do you need Greenpeace to do that? They are adult toys. For grownups. People who are generally supposed to be able to take care of their own life. We allow these people to vote about the nation's budget but we don't allow them to choose a dildo? Why does everyone try to be everyone else's parent? Doesn't really make sense. Don't these people have enough problems of their own? And shouldn't they stick to their market? I still wonder who came up with the idea to start a campaign for that. Or do dildos hurt the environment?

I also wait to see the ads: "I give money to Greenpeace because they made my buttplug safer. I've had pimples on my ass before but now they are gone. Thank you Greenpeace."

E$_manager 09-10-2006 05:12 PM

It is difficult to understand why should Greenpeace care about your ass, but how can you know that the production is not good if noone will tell you? Can you make an alalysis?

fhgmaster 09-11-2006 03:04 PM

You are wrong if you think that a condom can protect from all the toxic shit that might come with your favourite sex toy.

E.g. Phthalates can go through the structure of latex. As already mentioned, these substances are banned in Europe for toys, food industry and medical uses.

Get a toy made of medical grade silicone or (real) latex. They are more expensive, the choice is limited, but your health is worth it. :2 cents:

My GFY-first post wasted on something nobody will take to heart anyway :winkwink:

Bake 09-11-2006 03:50 PM

Get a dead whale up yaaaah greenpeace

Big Red Machine 09-11-2006 04:08 PM

Lets not Shoot the Messenger. I heard for along time some types of plastics mimic the estrogen molecule. So if they do pose a threat to women ,they should be aware of it. Who knows maybe by women putting their Battery Operated Boyfriends down ....some Webmaster might get laid....lol

Heheheh,

Well, they just dont want you to become sick after using one.. they just tell you about a potential hazzard to your health..
I hope the toy industry will take it serious and fix the problem so everyone can enjoy toys untill they die of old age..
