That would require me to write several paragraphs, which would cost me several minutes, while the same information is readily from other sources - one of which I just pointed out to you.

of course it can. is this a serious question? With mass volume buying comes peaked interest which in turn means people buy driving up the price but the guy (whale) with the big buy when low sells after everyone buys (price is now higher) and makes his cash. selling all of his stock in turn makes people think something is happening so everyone sells and drives the price back down. he already made his money.

rinse and repeat as needed. takes a ton of cash to do so though.

Okay, just for the fun of it. I say it can be manipulated. The price of everything that is traded, be it stocks, currencies or commodities is mainly dependent on what traders believe is a good price. Stock movements are 80% psychology. Shit, sometimes the stock price falls below what the company's worth if you just sell everything it owns.

There's this story about a guy who found a website from an energy company called powergen, who supposedly had a new plant in italy. The site was just registered and under construction.

So what he did was buy the stock and post his tip on the boards. The thing went viral and the stock price which was fairly constant before rose 6-10% if I remember correctly. Powergen denied having any plans about italy, but the price was still rising.

Then it turned out that the site was supposed to be for a penis enlargement company and the price went back down.

There are huge scammers in the stock market, as evident by the mass number of spam e-mails sent out by those trying to make a quick off of failing companies. They?ll spam millions of e-mails, trying to get thousands of people to buy into a fairly worthless stock. In a week the stock will go up fairly dramatically, say from a few pennies and claim the stock will go up to a level of grandeur. The spammer then will unload all of his stock significantly before then, making a shitload while killing the stock, making whatever you invested utterly worthless.

That said there are tons of good stocks out there. I invested heavily in Techwell and it really paid off big for me, but I only did so after doing research (though honestly Techwell was more of a luck thing for me than anything else; all stocks I?ve made any money with have been by luck lol) on the company. I?ve been burned as well (ADM stock, fucking ethanol!). It?s all one big game where you can make a little, make a lot, or lose a whole fucking lot? I wouldn?t play with it unless you have at least ten thousand to mess around with and it won?t affect you at all to lose it.

MaddCaz 09-08-2006 04:33 PM

I'm sure it can

Big Red Machine 09-08-2006 04:34 PM

Theres manipulation all over the market. If you put in a Market Order instead of a Limit they skim off the top alittle. Alot of the ol'style manipulation has been outted....going on TV or radio and talking up a stock.(Now they have to disclose whether they have the stock or not. It is a gamble just like poker....some people learn the unwritten rules and can make a living at it.

tranza 09-08-2006 04:35 PM

Hell yeah!

stevo 09-08-2006 04:52 PM

There's tons of manipulation! Market makers have total control. Then there are also shorters who can sell millions of shares they don't even own in order to drive prices down...

The stock market is a total sham. The joke is on people 'hoping' to get lucky.

Boobzooka 09-09-2006 12:14 AM

google: "plunge protection team" for an interesting little conspiracy theory. I don't have an opinion on it's validity.
