Somehow a hacker ERASED my hard drive and a month of content.

The man at the repair shop said that my using P2P fucked up my laptop...Even though I had Norton and a firewall, somehow a hacker got on and put a virus in that would cut my computer all the way off.

But here's the thing...I was told yesterday that my data could be saved after he flashed the drive...But whatever virus it was will erase the whole drive if it thinks you're trying to fix the problem, it goes into self destruct mode...And I was lucky because even though my drive got erased, the software was trying to DESTROY the drive so it wouldn't be useable.

i haven't fired up p2p in months so I don't know how this happened...But now I'll be downloading files on my backup laptop...

And also, if you have content on your drive, BACK IT UP...I didn't like a fool but all of it is still on my cameras so I'm straight...I'll NEVER do some shit like this again...And thankfully it only cost me $140 as opposed to thousands of dollars worth of content lost.

gimo33 09-06-2006 10:18 AM

what's the virus called?...

GermanTrashMan 09-06-2006 10:19 AM

MikesTraffic 09-06-2006 10:19 AM

I would highly recommend grabbing a 500-750 gb backup drive, throw in an enclosure, and use it as a dump so yo backup, disconnect, then its safe while you use the original copy....specially if your business is on it, all about fail safe abilities

Damian_Maxcash 09-06-2006 10:19 AM

mmmm. do you trust this tech guy?

Sounds like an ez $140.....

bknoob 09-06-2006 10:20 AM

want my personal opinion? Sounds like a bunch of BS to me and him trying to cover up the fact that he accidentally deleted your data

teg0 09-06-2006 10:20 AM

Sounds more like the computer repair guy fucked up and is trying to bullshit you to cover it up.

this also came to my mind...

bknoob 09-06-2006 10:21 AM

I have worked with thousands of computers and I have never come across a "self-destructing" virus that will delete your data if it seems like you are trying to fix it.. I am sure there are viruses like that out there but this somehow smells fishy. very very fishy. Either he's just trying to extort more money from you or some shit like that

gimo33 09-06-2006 10:22 AM

nice sig germantrashman :thumbsup

All I know is that even the indicator light when it's plugged in wouldn't come on before i took it there...Therefore, I couldn't even get it to turn on.

He quoted me the price when the data was still on the drive....Even still, if the computer was working, I wouldn't have brought it to him in the first place.

notabook 09-06-2006 10:25 AM

The guy is lying to you majorly. When you mount the drive in such a way to recover the DATA, it is essentially, for all intents and purposes, ?off? and whatever virus infecting it wouldn't spread like that when you are just reading the data and preparing a recovery attempt. The guy is dicking with you to get more cash or he himself fucked up your data and is scrambling to recover it and trying to come up with a lame-ass cover story.

I am convinced that no virus could cause physical harm to a drive - ie actually "break it". Im 99% sure anyway. :)

shake 09-06-2006 11:28 AM

It's a good idea to run p2p programs, and other shadey things on a cheap spare box just in case.. also sounds to me that he messed up.

Lykos 09-06-2006 12:07 PM

thats sux a lot

ladida 09-06-2006 12:08 PM

LOL. UBER stealth viruses!!! Trained at al-jazeera camps. Only one of the 100 viruses that apply passes, that's how selective the process is.

P.S.
BULLSHIT :P

Dirty F 09-06-2006 12:10 PM

Software that destroys a drive, like with a hammer? ... or starts a fire like in the beginning of a Mission Impossible show?

You're not at comp USA are you?

kin3tic 09-06-2006 01:06 PM

This has to be the lamest story I've ever heard.. I thought this kind of shit only went on back in the 90's with the little computer shops trying to rip off customers who didnt know anything
