IMHO there are two options, read the docs on dreamweaver and its fantastic for a visual html editor or.... just use notepad, i code in the latter and then check cross browser compatibility in dreamweaver.

I like notepad++ in windows

Text based, multi file search and replace, built in ftp and all the other quick features you need. Never used a GUI and never want to for webdesign.

Pretty sure Dreamweaver is the best for GUI editors, for pure HTML Homesite is pretty nice. I use notepad myself.

Topstyle Pro is a nice program for CSS if you're doing those.

I swear by vi when I'm in the shell (most of the time), and UltraEdit32 and Vim when I'm stuck in Windows. :thumbsup

BTW, Crimson Editor is a decent free alternative to UltraEdit if you don't feel like shelling out the $$$.

I know it sounds retarded, but I still use netscape composer 4.7 for simple shit and tweak the html with arachnaphelia.

Looks pretty good for a mac based developer tool but it surely lacks a whole lot. :2 cents:

I actually love the code view in dreamweaver, I count the # of times I have opened the graphical view in dreamweaver on one hand

Any program that produces html for you that I've ever seen has created terrible HTML. Notepad is the only way to go if you want to get it done right.

ED html is best beacuse it has almost all features like dreamweaver even more,it only doesnt have right click so thatsway i must use dreamweaver beacuse is faster work with him.ALso ED html is free.

TextPad for Windows, BBEdit for Mac, VIM for the rest.

Personally, I'm partial to HTML Kit.

I am not a designer at all but when I do need to edit HTML I use editplus for most and dreamweaver if I need to check tables or shit like that..

PSPAD http://www.pspad.com/ Freeware. Not a generator, pure editor.

I learned in frontpage and used it for a long time. It sucks ass but I was very quick with it.

I moved over to DW and LOVE it.

I use Dreamweaver 8 when I'm crunched for time. Then I go back (when I have time) to clean up the code in notepad.

Dreamweaver 8 is also one of the fastest ways to edit CSS. Built-in everything. Plus I love how it fills in the blanks and you just have to press enter while you're typing out the code. It saves you loads and loads of time.

I used to do everything with notepad, but Dreamweaver 8 is actually pretty darn good. I can't wait for the update.
