Why do you love soccer?

On another board this week, there was a debate as to why soccer was not as popular in America as in the rest of the world.

Many might find it interesting that here in the US, there was a professional soccer league that was quite popular for a while. The league was called the "North American Soccer League" and folded in 1984. The primary reason it folded is because it was mismanaged. In 1978, the New York Cosmos averaged 48,000 fans per game and had 70,000 at a few games. This to me indicates that soccer CAN become popular in the US under the right circumstances.

But this thread is not so much about that. Many people have told me why they didn't like soccer. I know there are many fans on GFY. For those of you that are, I would like to know why you DO love soccer?

football (yeah thats right, only american queers call it soccer) is elite

"only american queers call it soccer"

This is the most amazing, insightful thing I have ever read. You must have been saving that all year long.
You may have read somewhere that different languages and cultures have different names for different things. English speaking people call Deutschland Germany and call Espanol Spanish.

These different names for things, including each other, exist in all countries, languages, dialects, and so on.

They are indicative of the culture that created them and competing names for things; not sexual orientation.

Colin,

I have played soccer for over 23 years. When you play the game you understand it better. Many of the European and South American countries do not have American Football, Baseball (although becoming more popular in South America), or Basketball.

So just about everyone there lives and plays soccer/Futbol. I would give that as a main reason why so many people in those countries go nuts for the game.

Back to why I enjoy it so much... This goes back to my understanding of the game. I know what it takes to do some of the things that these guys do. And to have at any moment someone has the ability to make an amazing play and do something that defies the laws of physics and gravity.

That is the Allure for me.

more fun to watch paint dry

ADL Colin 06-21-2002 06:23 AM

Eric,

I think that is an excellent point.

I watched the USA-Germany game and thought it was very exciting and that the athletes were very skilled.

chodadog 06-21-2002 06:25 AM

I've grown up with it. It was the very first sport i played when i was young, and it's the sport i'll continue to play for quite some time!

Thumbelina 06-21-2002 06:26 AM

Hear, Hear Eric...........

I have been at it for over 25 years........and I have played American Football also (RB)........they are both great games.....

But it is the ability to play it anywhere, anytime with anyone that makes it a unique sport.

Can you tackle your father or grand father from behind or blind side them, without them getting injured, I think not and who here is still playing the sports they did in JR or High School ...........

With Soccer one can participate at all ages.........

My 4 year old son just started playing organized soccer and nothing thrills me more than to play with him.

This is something I hope he will enjoy for years to come.........

Hey............he wants to play Hockey too...........who knows?

Then why the hell it's called soccer over there ? Every other country calls it football - because players user their feet to kick the ball around.

bushwacker 06-21-2002 07:47 AM

Because we have a real man's sport here that we already call "Football"...so we save the pansy word for a pansy sport.

American Football is a joke, do you see the padding those guys wear?
Like wearing a suit of armor.
Why would they call it "football" when they throw the ball 95% of the time?

Have you by chance ever seen a rugby game? That makes American football look like a real pansy sport.

I love soccer way more than professional football, in fact I played soccer through high school and rec league during college. However, one thing that futbol or soccer can't touch is college football, I would rather watch that than futbol or football anyday.

if those rugby players were so good why wouldn't the play pro football and make millions instead of playing for a six pack of fucking beer, and by the way the also run the ball...

Well, I'll have to agree with you as far as rugby being a much rougher sport....BUT saying the American Footbal is a joke is WAY far fetched. It's a LOT more of a man's sport than Soccer.

Try playin' American FootbAL sometime & then come back here & tell us if you think it's a joke or not. I'd be interested in what you think after that...

Because some people still play for the love of the game... That and I think the lack of padding has caused some of those rugby guys to lose quite a few brain cells.

I played Soccer, Football (TE and Cornerback), and Baseball (Catcher and Center Field) in high school. Still play Soccer and Softball today. Picked up Ice hockey when I was twenty talk about another game that you have to play to really undrstand and get into it. Soccer and Hockey are both on the same level as far as they are slowly coming around in the States. I personally can watch just about any sport and enjoy it. Bowling and Pool don't really get me all that excited, but hey you can't please all the people all the time.

Thumblina, let your kid play both. Soccer skills can be used in hockey and the balance and toughness he will learn in Hockey will help him emencely in soccer. Many of the great hockey players out there also played soccer as a kid.

Hockey is WAY more a poplular sport than soccer here. People actually go to Hockey games. At least it's popular in Chicago. O=f course, Chicago is a HUGE sports town, so maybe elsewhere it's not as popular....

To be fair folks this was an innocent thread asking people about soccer.
Typical some moron needs to come in with the "soccer sucks", Soccer is for panys etc...attitude..
Someone like that is referred to as a 'troll' on msg boards. They post messages with the purpose & intent of causing arguements and flames.

RW316 06-21-2002 09:02 AM

weel i think soccer isnt popular in the US is that big broadcasting systems dont show that much soccer.. and there isnt any marketing for soccer as big as basketball or football

DarkJedi 06-21-2002 09:07 AM

American Football is for idiots who can't do anything else exepted bang their heads against each-other. No brains there - see someone running with the ball, speed up and knock the fuck out of him.

yeah but they are a bunch of rich idiots.

LoveAsianChicks 06-21-2002 09:21 AM

Most Athletes make too much money.
No matter how good someone is I don't think they should be paid 25Million+ for 1 season. Sports are fun, but in reality they are just games for kids to play.

When I was young I played many sports,
But how many adults play them??
A fat 0.03% maybe.

remember playing basketball with the "boys" then finding girls & cars more fun then shooting hoops as you got a little older?

Sports are fun but really for the kids.

:2 cents:
