If the hard drive in your server(s) crashed right now and it lost all data...
Do you have backups? Have you paid additional $ to your hosting company for backup service?
This thread is basically an awareness thing...So many times people loose all their important files because they don't think about the chance of something happening. Where would you start right now if your sites went down and the data on that server was lost? Are you prepared with backups? Think about this...Answer the poll honestly with what you know...Don't assume your hosting company automatically backs up your data...Do you know for sure you have a backup of your data? Including Mysql and other important files? Do you store all your mail using webmail? Do you have backups of it? |
I originally said I'd do the backups myself.
Since I have the attention span and memory of a flea, that didn't work out so well. So I contacted my host, and asked that backups be included in my package. I chose the option of having a second HD installed, and that is in process as we speak. |
I back-up everything locally and mirror it as well. :thumbsup
|
had this happen to me once, bought one of those data recovery programs wich worked out fine. However I backed up everything ever since.
|
All our servers are raid 1, we have local backup servers in the datacenter + backup servers at our office. Backup is done daily.
And never trust your hosting provider to do backup :2 cents: |
you always need backups, even if it costs extra
|
Bump for awareness
|
Crutial Question... hope for some good feedback on this one so start posting. :thumbsup
|
Got backup on my harddrive..
|
This is a great topic. Not enough people realize the importance of a proper back-up system or they don't want to pay the additional price.
Ask yourself this question: if my business isn't worth protecting for an extra couple bucks a month, why am I in business? Back-up is like fire insurance. Owning a house without fire insurance is just... well, playing with fire. |
I do it all myself. Dammit.
|
What's a server?
|
My initial jump into adult was done on a differnet host then my corporate stuff, and I choose that host quite badly. They sold the company three times, lost computers and finally lost my data.
When I asked for any help they could give restoring the backup that I payed them to do - they said it was stored on the server that crashed... and that they changed their adult policy so it didn't matter - my account was canceled. so from then on - I do my own backups to a testing server in my home. Who knows if their backup format would even have worked at another host? |
I've backup server in my office.
I also do a back of all data every week on DVDs. |
backups are very needed i do it every week.

|
jump off my roof
|
whats adult warden? and I have it all backed up , so I am good.
|
Adult Warden is still under wraps right now...
Now the people saying they have made backups...Does this include your SQL databases? The whole point behind this thread and poll is to bring awareness to backing up and making sure your not at risk to lose your entire site due to not having your files properly backed up. |
I had that happen before and I had to start from scratch..it sucked
|
Ive actually lost all my data on my computer and I know of how to get most/all of the info back. its possible
|
Very good advice Adult Warden. Data loss sucks! I speak from experience :(
Bump :) |
It's happened.
HD or server dies. Something else odd happens, whatever. Maybe a handful of times in a decade. But my hosting (B-H-E/naked) has backups, and co-lo's to minimize the grief. :thumbsup |

Yes, I'm paranoid. The rest is rsync'd daily to various geographies after the updates are done. The wonders of cron and shell scripts. :thumbsup |
Depends which server, important ones are backed up, a few not so important ones aren't.. also one bank of 65 servers is pretty safe because the stuff is on all 65 machines spread around north america in 4 different locations. If Cogentco goes down I'm in trouble though :Oh crap
|
Ive got the sites saved, but not the databases.. but prohosters is a good company and always seem to have the backups.
|
I making backups directly to my local server beacuse is safer and cheaper.
I heard cases where people lost both-host and backups |
I wonder how many people are actually doing something now :)
|
we back up everything onto an external removable HD that gets put in a fireproof safe.

A better question is - if your ISP went out of business tomorrow what would you do? I used to just rsync between my servers daily and take a snapshot to my local machine monthly, but do to a problem I had with one ISP I now rsync my servers to my local PC nightly.

i keep a file structure on my computer the same as my server, and no file is deleted after uploading, so every once and a while i backup my mysql thats all |
What do you mean? I assumed myspace handled all that shit for me
|
I handle the backups on a weekly basis and burn everything to dvds.
And the archive sorted by date |
I love rsync.
|
i lost so many hard drives before I learnt! now my machines have SATA raid where its important and feasable to do and I got remote backups to my house of other important shit
|
I picked the last option.

Backup and emergency redeployment services come standard with RealPro Hosting. Expect to be down for no more than an hour, and lose no more than 24 hours worth of data.
