Ratings: Pirates of the Caribbean Crushed Star Wars Head to Head on TV Last Nite

I knew "Pirates" has become more popular than "Star Wars" but I just didn't realize by how much. Look at the head to head battle last nite on TV as the movies went at each other:

http://www.zap2it.com/tv/ratings/zap...ings-headlines

The Emmy's as expected won the ratings nite, but look at what happened between Pirates vs. Star Wars:

8 p.m "Pirates" earned a 6.1 for ABC, FOX's "Star Wars" averaged 2.7

9 p.m "Pirates" earned a 7.0 for ABC so it improved, FOX's "Star Wars" had a miserable 3.2 rating.

--------------------

Wow. I didn't know there was THAT much of a difference. Pirates crushed Star Wars.

summerland 08-28-2006 12:43 PM

this is a very interesting stat.. what does it mean to the force?

Trax 08-28-2006 12:44 PM

this means shit
pirates 2 is still in the cinemas
the effect on ratings is huge of course

pirates is nowhere near what starwars overall

Sly 08-28-2006 12:44 PM

Which Star Wars? The third one? If its 4-6, I can see why, they have been played over and over throughout the years. Even if it was the third, I still see how it happened... Pirates has a huge fan base that includes women and kids, Star Wars is more of a nerd/guy thing.

I have both on DVD and if I was looking through the channels I probably would have stopped on Pirates as well.

Last night I watched Willow. My friend and I were laughing at how many parallels there were to LOTR. It was basically the Lucas version.

Sly 08-28-2006 12:48 PM

This is off topic but does anybody have any idea when the 5th seasons of 24 and The Shield will be released on DVD? I've been holding out for both and haven't been able to find release dates, even on JoBlo.

sounds like a Star Wars fan in denial. don't get me wrong because I like Star Wars but lets face it, Pirates has become huge. Pirates 2 will be only the 3rd movie EVER to go over $1 Billion worldwide at the box office. and I really didn't go ga-ga over Pirates 2; I loved the first one way, way better. but like Sly said, Pirates has more over-all appeal and that means its more popular. the box office doesn't lie if you compare the last Star Wars movie, released just last year, compared to Pirates 2. Pirates 2 is hammering it, but not quite to the extent of the ratings last nite on TV. I thought Star Wars would be somewhat close to Pirates on TV at least, but it was a big knock-out for Pirates.

one Depp movie that I love that no one really talks about is "The Ninth Gate." Excellent occult mystery drama by Roman Polanski starring Depp. Check it out.

:thumbsup

No wonder--it's a lame movie. Not as God-awful dreadful as Episode 1, but still...

wedouglas 08-28-2006 01:18 PM

I saw both were on and decided to watch Pirates instead. It is a better movie:2 cents:

thats probably why it crushed Star Wars in the ratings so badly.

Maybe, but I don't think he's a versatile dad.

remember your talking attack of the clones...not the total star wars franchise, and you cant compare the box office of today against the older star wars movies

Doctor Dre 08-28-2006 07:51 PM

Maybe because tons of people just seen Pirates 2 in the movie theatres ?

Yeah you can. Back in the 70's, hardly any movies were made, 1/5 the amount of today due to the home video explosion. Movies like The Sting, Jaws, and Star Wars had hardly any summer competition and were "the only game in town." They weren't pushed out of theaters so fast like they are today, to make room for new fresh titles.

Thats like saying you can't compare Star Wars to Gone With the Wind, which is even more ridiculous. GWTW played in some places for well over a year as it had virtually no competition back then.

Here are the all-time box office sales adjusted for inflation.

Wiggles 08-29-2006 02:49 AM

people who haven't seen it just want to see what the hype is all about, and others have seen star wars movies so many times they are checking out whats new, pirates will never be bigger the star wars.

It already is. The last and final Star Wars movie garnered $850 Million worldwide in box office receipts. Pirates 2, released just one year later, will soon be over $1 Billion worldwide. Star Wars is more popular with males and computer dudes but not with the overall public. Most women don't like Star Wars but both men and women, and kids for that matter, love the Pirates movies. I'm not a big fan of the Pirates 2, but I really liked Pirates 1 a lot. And I really enjoyed Revenge of the Sith (the two before that sucked though).

What is the collective intake of revenue for all Star Wars movies since the first one came out back in the 70's? I hazard a guess it's in the multi-billions.

Collectively Star Wars owns all. Period.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/trilogyww.htm

The Lord of the Rings $2,916.6 Billion

Harry Potter (first 3 movies) $2,637.1 Billion

Star Wars 1-3 (last 3 movies) $2.424.0 Billion

Pirates of the Caribbean (first 2) $1,618.0 Billion
(with more to come)

Babagirls 08-29-2006 09:08 AM

Now add in Star Wars FIRST 3 movies and like I said... they OWN.

TheLegacy 08-29-2006 09:33 AM

sales of one movie over another is one way to look at it - but in 50 or even 100 years people will still be quoting star wars and making offhanded comments about certain scenes while Pirates will be a long time ago blockbuster that will be brushed off every christmas in someones DVD collection.

you can't compare 6 movies to a trilogy of 3. Star Wars just isn't as popular abroad as it is here at home. Even here at home it makes less money than the Pirates trilogy will end up making. Don't get me wrong; I'm not pleased with that as I think Pirates 2 was merely an OK movie, while ROTS was much better. That being said, Pirates 1 rocked big-time. but you are coming from a male aged 20-50 perspective on this; females tend to stay away from Star Wars as it has hardly any female appeal. Old males and females also tend to stay away from Star Wars as they aren't into sci fi fantasy movies. I saw lots of older folks at the theater when I went to Pirates 2.

the ratings thing on TV also shows the point; Pirates crushed Star Wars, just slaughtered it.

Why not? When you say "Star Wars" it refers to the whole set of 6 films, not just a particular 3.

And, even with all the disadvantages you mentioned above, Star Wars STILL managed to earn it's way into the top grossing list of all time. Don't you find that incredible? I do.

But you're right, I do come at this from a certain perspective. I was actually IN the theatre for the first Star Wars (episode IV), and know first-hand just what a huge beyond massive impact the movie made at that time and in years since.

The pirate movie was big too, but in my perception just not as hugely impacting, not by a long shot. You're right about it's affect on women though.... I don't think I've seen a movie that got women's juices flowing like Depp's character in POTC. I'm actually surprised you don't see more guys walking around with eye liner on. :D

How many movies were playing the same day as Star Wars and how long did it stay in the theater?

thats the whole point. Jaws and Star Wars, back then, they were the only games in town. i've talked to other ppl in other cities who told me those two movies, in particular, almost played for an entire year. there were so few releases back then compared to now because now they crank out movies like link sausages due to home video.

if a movie plays for over 12 weeks now, that is considered spectacular. they get pushed out by the newest Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell movie.

rodney25 08-29-2006 06:23 PM

For sure, the last sequel will be another blockbuster hit.

Then I guess there's no point in comparing the revenue from some newer market movie from 2005-6 with "Star wars" now is there? :1orglaugh

Drake 08-30-2006 07:10 PM

Is Pirates any good? I haven't seen any of them. if it's a kids movie I'll pass.
