$500,000 for GFY.com renewal are you kidding me?

Thats right folks. If the registries get their way in their new revised contracts thats what alot of us will be saying and you could be renewed out of business. Currently the negotiations are only on .biz, .org, and .info. The registries will have the right to place any value they see fit on any domain. A bit like .tv (which is managed by Verisign also the manager of .com and.net) So you can very well bet if .org, .info, and .biz get their contracts modified to allow this Verisign will soon follow with .com and .net.

The registries themselves say "We would never do that." As far as raising the registry price. And yes one could very well renew for 10 years before the change but for one if you're like me 10 year renewals onhundreds if not thousands of names is alot to swallow. In addition think of this senario. What if a government decided they don't like porn (lmao) and they put presure on the ICANN and ICANN puts pressure on the registry to change certain if not all adult related domain renewals to $1,000,000 a year.

Here's the prpossed agreements

that's nuts

Adult Warden 08-26-2006 01:09 PM

What does that have to do with gfy.com its not .org or .biz or .info

onwebcam 08-26-2006 01:14 PM

If they get it you can very well bet Verisign will be asking for the amendment aswell. They have shown many times in the past their only motivation is money and not what is right for the internet community as a whole. Especially since it is modeled after .tv which they manage.

Good, keep them both alive for a few days. :)

Very likely, too.

MetaMan 08-26-2006 01:34 PM

this is pure bullshit, the names would have been "worth" almost nothing but the register fee unless they were developed.

this affects me huge if it goes through and we will be paying close attention to this situation.

im not to sure about johns comments on this i havent talked to him this weekend, but all this talk about pussy.org has me a tad worried.

although anything is possible i do not think that this will end up passing, the amount of lawsuits would be ongoing.

teksonline 08-26-2006 01:36 PM

anyone who reads into this i have some bridges for sale

free4porn 08-26-2006 01:53 PM

Arggg this just annoys me, the Internet needs to be saved too:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=vhBzPV9FOgA

Big companies shouldnt be allowed to control the net.

onwebcam 08-26-2006 01:54 PM

Some have too much faith in the government, ICANN, and the likes of verisign to do the right thing. The large telecom providers are already trying to put in place a mechanism to allow them to manipulate the VOIP industry. The cable companies are trying to gain the rights to charge the likes of Google, Amazon and such a premium for users to access their sites. How else would you read it?

BTW, my city sold a bridge not too long ago. Ofcourse the idea was for the buyer to dismantle it but their motivation was money. So the old saying doesn't fly anymore. You can actually buy a bridge.

jimthefiend 08-26-2006 03:24 PM

It won't happen. Be the same faux nonsense we always go through.

However, the idea itself is the scariest one I've heard. This beats .xxx or 2257 drama hands down imho.

free4porn 08-26-2006 03:29 PM

That change would effect so many people though, there are many webmasters (non adult industry) who are protesting big style at this!

L0rdJuni0r 08-26-2006 03:38 PM

that would suck BoyAlleys gay cock if it goes through....

Drake 08-26-2006 04:01 PM

Won't happen, it's just too unreasonable

free4porn 08-26-2006 04:15 PM

hope ur right!

tedwinters 08-26-2006 04:28 PM

meh.. once the road is open, we may not see it in the next few years, but it'll definitely happen..
gotta fight hard to reject it..

marcjacob 08-26-2006 04:33 PM

Wont competition stop this? Sure you can still take a domain to another registar who will try to undercut.

HunkyLuke 08-26-2006 04:37 PM

it makes no sense, you develop a brand and all the sudden the registrars are allowed to charge you a fortune for your hard work?

bigmacandcheese 08-26-2006 04:57 PM

onwebcam - thanks for posting that, I was reading about this the other day and all webmasters need to know about this - serious stuff

blazi 08-26-2006 05:07 PM

Sinstar 08-26-2006 05:12 PM

Fucking lame... Thats all I have to say.

Cyber Fucker 08-26-2006 05:56 PM

It's a joke? Yeap, It must be someone's joke cuz it's unreal...

BBWTori 08-26-2006 06:03 PM

That would seriously fucking suck....who would end up determining a domains worth then? ICANN?

Dirty Dane 08-26-2006 06:15 PM

lol.....................................

XonDemand 08-26-2006 06:20 PM

never going to happen, as you can get your own acreditation from icann and be your own registra for cheaper then you think ;-)

onwebcam 08-27-2006 06:59 PM

The registrars aren't the ones who are in contract negotiations. It's the core registries. Getting accredited doesn't do anything. It's a bit like the redemption buyout fee and even the registration cost itself. The registry sets the yearly pricing and its then passed on to the registrar who then marks it up.

madawgz 08-27-2006 07:02 PM

thats not going to happen...

BlackCrayon 08-27-2006 07:09 PM

i don't think it would last too long. take them to court for extortion and let them try to justify such outrageous costs. they simply couldn't. their explaination is because a website makes money off the name they are entitled to it? why? makes no sense.

JimiJimi 08-27-2006 07:13 PM

the tax man at work someones has to pay to protect all the f***ing oil

RichGuy 08-27-2006 07:24 PM

hang on t'ya dicks boys its going to happen.....make sure you tick auto renewal options on your new domains!

Wildcard2 08-27-2006 07:45 PM

I would like to see the cost for renewal on this date 2011-Sep-14, would see a $10,000,000 renewal fee (google.com)
Or would they be exempt somehow since they are mainstream?

http://forum.icann.org/lists/biz-tld.../msg00106.html
verisign loves the idea

GeorgeK 08-27-2006 09:30 PM

There is at least 1 supporter of the proposed .biz/info/org contracts....Chuck Gomes of VeriSign!! See:

http://forum.icann.org/lists/biz-tld.../msg00106.html

Quote:

Ensuring the continued security and stability of its infrastructure is
critical to the continued growth of the Internet. That is why VeriSign
supports the proposed new registry agreement for .biz. The agreement
closely mirrors the model registry agreements that ICANN has already
used or proposed for .com, .info, .mobi, .net, and .org.

These agreements strike the important balance between protecting
Internet users and providing registry operators with the incentives and
flexibility to continue to invest in the Internet infrastructure. They
also create a level playing field for all the registries.
He posted similar comments for .info and .org.

It would not surprise me if VeriSign is salivating at the prospect of these contracts being approved, so that it creates a precedent for future .com/net renegotiations. Don't be naive and think that this is only about .biz/info/org -- like a chess match, you need to think several moves ahead.
