Vanilla TGP

Anyone using Vanilla? I was thinking of snagging a copy but I've not seen too many people that run it. Thoughts? Opinions?

Ice 08-25-2006 07:53 PM

I was looking at using it but I have heard their support wasn't very good. Not sure about that for sure but I went with Comus Thumbs. Killer support with comus

Juicy D. Links 08-25-2006 07:59 PM

i prefer Comus tbh

czarina 08-25-2006 08:01 PM

I have seen some people using, but have not heard much about it. I have comus, and love it. They even have a free one, that you can upgrade later

See, I've used Comus a few times and even though the support is top notch, I can't stand the thumbing procedure and the clutter of the Comus admin. Smart Thumbs is my normal weapon of choice but for the project I have in mind, ST just won't cut it. :(

Makingcoin 08-25-2006 08:34 PM

Vanilla support is A+ and script is awesome.

Damian_Maxcash 08-25-2006 08:37 PM

Its pretty good - and if you are going to be selling spots then it cant be beaten.

The only thing I am not so keen on is getting a licence can take a day or 2 - when I am in the mood to whack up a site I need it straight away - but not everyone is as impatient as me :)

yeah I can definately wait a few days as the site I'd be using it on is a 3rd bench type deal.

hows the templating engine? Is it a bitch like Autogallery?

JD 08-25-2006 09:41 PM

JD 08-25-2006 11:11 PM

tenderobject 08-26-2006 06:26 AM

pornpf69 08-26-2006 07:40 AM

I have tryed to use Vanilla but I was never able to make it run properly (and to generte the TGP)....so I went back to COMUS...

backman1 08-26-2006 08:49 AM

I never heard about vanilla, cumus complicated, St rocks...but support by icq.....

tranza 08-26-2006 10:44 AM

As a submitter I hate Vanilla, too many mistakes and timouts when I submit.

testpie 08-26-2006 10:52 AM

I was going to try it, but it's encoded in that Zend crap, and i can't be arsed installing Zend Optimizer on my server.

fris 08-26-2006 10:54 AM

installing zend optimizer takes less than 20 seconds

jeffrey 08-26-2006 10:59 AM

I want to state that I dont run it, but hear its great from the people I have talked to that use it.

Did you ask for support help?

I find that I get FAR FAR more timeouts and etc with sites running comus (mostly because more sites are running it), but I never blame the script, its almost always the server.

I think Vanilla just spreads by word of mouth?

I would be willing to walk you thru any thumbing procedure, turbo cropping being my favorite, and I'll help you with the project you want to do, Comus is more powerful with custom applications.

dakota1358 09-04-2006 07:04 PM

I use Vanilla on all my sites great program, easy to use and support is great

imho, the way thumbing is handled is very "clunky" I can thumb about 200/hr with ST versus 75-100 with Comus and ST works in both IE and FF

When I've tried turbo it always fucks up and grabs parts of the gallery template for thumbs :(

for this project, I don't need thumbs though :winkwink:

200 an hour is easy, and there are some upgrades coming very soon that will make it even faster. If its grabbing parts of the template, you need to change some of the settings. If not thumbs, then links are even easier. Tell me what you want, I'll look into getting it for you

You don't ask for much do you? In Comus gallery review, you can rewrite them yourself, I'm planning on that when I start my first text only tgp.

crockett 09-04-2006 08:40 PM

They have a free version, why not just try it out?

Damian_Maxcash 09-04-2006 10:14 PM

Sorry sperm, I didnt see you ask me about the templates last time - yeah its pretty str8 forward.

The thing I have found with Vanilla is you have to read the instructions - as men I know that goes against everything we believe in , but it just wont work if you work on the I 'assume' this is how you do it princible.

Its the same with the installation.

The problem with Comus is its such a fucking mess - I install it at least once a month and give up after staring at that interface for a few minutes - I did it again just the other day.

They should open it up to a couple of developers to "skin" the interface and provide a decent integrated help system - if someone with some AJAX skills got hold of it, it could be awesome.

BIGTYMER 09-04-2006 11:17 PM

Vanilla TGP is awesome! And always get my problems fixed asap. Support is A+.

Sounds like your talking out your ass, installation is one simple php file that you ftp to your server, then run from your browser. simple templates are already included, or you can change them, lots of examples in the support forum. Maybe you could shed some light on what problem you have with the interface? It doesn't need Ajax, it has Tony(sixzeros)! The only people that truely have a problem with comus is the compitition!

Try reading what I said - I didnt say COMUS had a problem with installation.

Or with templates.

I have a problem with the interface - and I am not competition.

Sounds like you are the one talking out of their ass.

:1orglaugh I think he means the admin interface. Anyone that's seen the Comus interface has to admit that it's one ugly and rather confusing place to be if you've never seen it. And the manual tbh is pretty shity.

Vendzilla 09-05-2006 07:34 AM

I wonder if anyone thats got a problem with the interface has seen it since the changes 6 months ago

heh - i've installed comus numerous times and each time it's installed without a problem, but that's notthe issue here. Comus is the ugliest most unfriendly pieces of software i've ever come across. That alone is reason enough to not use it. FFS - i don't want to learn a new fucking lang to make a tgp -

No matter how good it is, the plain and simple facts are that it isn't userfriendly - it's made by geeks for geeks.

EDIT

Sperminator - Vanilla is awesome, very easy to use, templating is a fucking BREEZE. But as Damian said, read the manual. The manual isn't all that big and Vanilla is so damn easy to use.

So you don't like it??? But your not saying what you don't like about it. Just throwing out a lot of verbs. Your a webmaster, you don't know html? What language are you talking about? Unfriendly? We have techs on the board almost 24/7 to help out!

I think you should try to read everything twice, you obviously have some comprehension problems.
