END WEB USER: Most common screen resolution?
END USER QUESTION:
What is the most used screen resolution by the majority of Web Surfers...? GFY knows, GFY knows it all my friends. |
1024x768 is still the most common, although many surfers now have 1280x1024, so I compromise and design pages 800 pixels wide.

it's close to 50% 1024 and 50% 800 I find ..
Here's a thought though tried buying a 17 inch monitor lately ? almost impossible to get where I am. Larger resolutions are comin :) |

Majority has 1024x768, but annoyingly many have 800x600.. so I design 'em 760px wide.

I understand that.. we run tests on our own traffic.. but as the poster in question can't or hasn't, w3 is as good as anything. Given that webmasters are going to be more technologically advanced than peoples grandparents I assume it is skewed towards the large end of the scale... which is why i wouldn't be abandoning 800x600 as a porn site res any time too soon. |
When I decided to give up on catering to 56k dial-up and 800x600 screen res customers, my sales went way up. People that can afford the technology (DSL and higher res screens), can afford to join pay sites, and they demand - or at the very least appreciate it, when you deliver a product that sizzles with their set-up.
I still have plenty of photo sets and old 3.5 Mb clips for the 56k crowd on my site, but my best sales and retention are to people that can download my complete 20+ min., 200Mb scenes. ADG Webmaster |

Catering to 56k doesn't take much but 800x600 is a very significant chunk of people. Don't forget that people with 800x600 screens also aren't the most tech savvy and unlike their grandson on their 1280x1024 DSL machine isn't filesharing 50 gig of porn for free. The cost of resolution isn't a big deal these days.. you're talking legacy stuff and computers being handed to grandparents etc. Broadband is a different story. Only 2% of our members use 56k streams... I would certainly say most of any increase you saw would come from a broadband focus rather than a site thats a little wider than before. Also other factors can come into play like the new tour might have been better at selling whether it was wider or not. But then again.. I shouldn't really say anything until i've had two identical tours running in tandem - one for 800 wide and one for 1024 wide. Which I don't. |
This is stats based on 4.2 million visitors to one of my sites the last year.
1. 1024 x 768 53.4 % 2. 1280 x 1024 31.0 % 3. 800 x 600 13.8 % This should give a somewhat image of it. The stats are collected with webstats4u which I recommend you stay the fuck away from since they integrated a popup in their new code. |

My work monitor goes from 640 x 480 to 2048 x 1536
I use 1280 x 1024 for most photos. |

It will be interesting to see when the bigger programs change to 1024x768 res sites.
|
1280x1024 works webworkers and gamers... small resolution for surfers and chats only..
|
Wide sites piss me off. I run trillian and winamp down the right side of my screen, so I only have my browser open to about 900 pixels wide, minus the scroll bar. Don't make me side scroll.
|
i would love to do away with 800x600, but designing specifically for anything larger really fucks over the low res user. there is still enough out there that it can hurt your bottom line.
