Over 98.3% of all web users have the Macromedia Flash Player.

Check that out and all new computers being bought already have it installed. SO now what do you have to say about that!:thumbsup

I don't disagree that the Flash Developers get too complicated with their shit. If you keep it simple and Simplicity is always the key, I believe it adds value to your site. Try using it and do something the way you think Flash should be used. You'll probably be surprised what kind of a response you may get.:thumbsup

It's complete bullshit.

Pipecrew 06-17-2002 05:23 PM

true enough, 98.3 is a bullshit stat... He must work for Macromedia or developed a line of flash sites and realizes no one likes them?

i thought this was laughable, but i just asked my friend who works at macromedia and he said they believe its actually 99% since its been shipping with PC's since win98. weird.

DX 06-17-2002 05:28 PM

Oh, it may be a somewhat accurate stat...
But I've purchased a lot of 'latest and greatest' off the shelf PC's,
as well as custom built PC's.....

Not one had a current release version of the player installed.

If your're exporting your work for clients in the current version of the player then you don't deserve to call yourself a flash designer.
and that was a bit of sneak mr DX, as you know full well the "current release" version of the player is pretty damn new and hasn't had the time to make it through the market place most all the flash you will see online is in flash 4.. and to a lesser extent flash 5 which the latest and greatest PC's definately do have pre-installed.

Well, I would if it was good, but most surfers don't wanna look at that flash stuff

take a look at al4a worldsex and thehun

do you think if surfers really loved flash, they wouldn't have it all over the friggin pages?

;)

SykkBoy 06-17-2002 05:59 PM

surfers just wanna see the pussy (or the cock on gay sites)

maybe if they had an option, but for the most part, they are there for the pussy...if they want flash, they'll go to newgrounds (who's porn flash foray hasn't exactly been the overwhelming success it could/should be).....

Never called myself a flash designer, now did I?
I'm a graphics guy... and a flash hobbyist...

Didn't say I bought of them all in one sitting, now did I? This is many PC purchases over several years, for both myself, my business, and on behalf of others...

Most recently. I bought a brand new Sony 'vaio digital studio' a few months ago, before flash 6 came out, but WELL after flash 5 was out released. It did not have the flash 5 player installed. It had Flash 4.

bhutocracy 06-17-2002 06:09 PM

why do we have to go through this every month? I feel like freaking copying and pasting my replies from all the other threads. listen... I tell you what... I will design a flash enabled site, as I have recommended in the past, ie not a 100% flash site that may spook some surfers, but a site with flashed areas - areas that appear as normal gifs/jpegs to people without the plugin... splash, 3 tours, logo and a join plus a flash area HPA for $900 - *IF* you back me up next time this argument pops up..

I love them..

DX 06-17-2002 06:19 PM

Are you trying to turn this into some lame attempt to drum up business?
ROFL

Believe it or not, I don't have the time or desire to read every thread..
If you've made an arguement in the past... whooptie friggen doo..

I gave a real world reply from a real world point of view, based on real world experiences...

Whoah.. dude.. that "can't call themselves a flash designer" was NOT aimed at you.. because you were deriding it i wouldn't have assumed you were.. so there was no personal edge to that comment.. only the "sneak" one :)
I output all of my work to flash 4. (except for WM stuff which is in 5) so i know im covered.. even with the out of date software on the Sony :)

InsaneMidget 06-17-2002 06:23 PM

I have recently been using more flash in my designs. I think little areas of flash really make a site better. I agree though that some designers get a little crazy with their designs. However, I'm all for the "Keep it simple" motto.
Surfers want to see porn not flashy shit blinding them while they are whacking the weiner.

heheh "a designer scorned"
I did not see your previous post.. you will note i am candid and friendly with you in my last post.. and my arguments have not been aimed at you specifically.. once i saw you took my previous comment personally, and would have thought i was referring to you, i regretted offering to do work because i knew you'd jump on it, thinking it was an easy opportunity to get barb in to someone you thought took at swipe at you...
at any rate, I too have a real world view, from years of experience doing flash and design.
and the offer still stands

In a post quoting me, which usually implies a direct reply, you said:

Sounded (to me) like it was aimed at me...
If not, my bad, have a Heineken on me.

I had NO idea you were a designer.. and the number 1 cardinal rule is to NEVER say a person isn't a professional.. or question their ability (followed closely by not offering to do work after scorning a fellow designer :)) You will notice I refer to you as "mr DX" before i started to direct my comments to you. I try not to make enemies here and rarely have bad things to say about people here.. that comment was directed to the open air.. but i can see that you as a designer would have taken that personally no question about it. just as you assumed I was trashing you, I assumed you weren't a designer and wouldn't have looked at my comment that way.
