Cookies in ref codes and privacy software - what is the bottom line??

Two things,

1 - Does privacy/pc-cleaning software erase cookies that sponsors use for referral tracking?

2 - If so, which sponsors are vulnerable to this type of situation?

ServerGenius 06-17-2002 04:33 AM

1: yes
2: all sponsors which use affil software that depends on cookies.
I don't know exactly how much and which....but it's ALOT!

Less than 0.1% of surfers use it..

privacy software can't decide which are "good" cookies or which are "bad" cookies...It's all or nothing kind of deal.

But a good privacy software, like Internet Eraser, will give you the choice of not erasing cookies if you so choose!

ServerGenius 06-17-2002 07:33 AM

yes but surfers donīt give a fuck about our cookies so my guess
is most of them delete them anyway....if you donīt porn on your
machine then you also donīt want porncookies on your box.

So basically we could be screwing ourselves if we are pushing something like internet eraser along with our other sponsors.

oh great.

The solution is to NOT use a sponsor which tracks with cookies only.

In reality maybe 0.001% of your surfers have bought something like internet eraser, but many surfers disable cookies.
I'm very certain at least 20% of your visitors have cookies disabled.
Losing 20% of you income isn't fun is it?

which sponsors do you suggest?

IE 6 can shut off all cookies within the privacy settings anyway, can it not?

ServerGenius 06-17-2002 12:19 PM

Yes Cookies can be turned off in the browser....but 80% of the
traffic that is buying porn donīt know how to do it.

Internet eraser software is not widely used.....yet....and it better
stays that way for another while...Yes there are cookie alternative
methods of tracking sales but still a LOT of sponsors use cookies.

Cookie crusher software is bad for our business sure short term
you can make a few bucks....but Iīm in it for the long term.
Even if it would not hurt me directly I still wouldnīt use it
