Whats this Ubantu thing that everyone is going on about?

Anyone using it?

I downladed the DVD version, but I have run out of blanks so I cant install it.

Anyone got an opinion?

meh its a headache unless you know what you are doing
many people have installed it and switched back to windows a few weeks later

fuzzylogic 08-14-2006 05:43 PM

wtf is ubantu?

Are you talking about ubuntu, the new user friendly linux? I used the live cd once on my PC, worked great right out of the box. But its linux, so there will be teething problems.

Paul Waters 08-14-2006 06:24 PM

I set up a server using Ubuntu in a couple of hours. Apache, MySQL, Samba. Also set it up as a desktop.

Now my testing of PHP stuff is much easier.

It is the best distro I have seen.

I heard it is supported by some rich philanthropic guy.

Ubuntu is excellent, download the live CD and run it without having to install anything if you are new to linux.

free4porn 08-15-2006 10:48 AM

sounds cool, will have to check it out

KRL 09-02-2006 07:53 AM

I just set it up on one my PC's. Its Excellent!!!

Easy to install. Easy to use. Easy to update. And its free!

Use easyubuntu.com or getautomatix.com to load the extra stuff.

Linux is a different world than Windows, but its much more stable and once you get the gist of it, you really fall in love with it compared to all the Win BS we have to deal with frequently.

minusonebit 09-02-2006 08:09 AM

I bet its horribly insecure... I should download it and play with it.

Gillespie 09-02-2006 08:16 AM

It is not insecure. However, unless you're using it in a server, Linux desktops are worthless in this industry.

Yngwie 09-02-2006 08:20 AM

can you install that OS if you already have Windows XP pro installed on your hard drive or will installing this OS fuck windows xp up?

Gillespie 09-02-2006 08:23 AM

Yes, but you have to partition the drive very carefully first. I you really want to dual boot, I'd rather start from scratch. First install Windows, then Linux. You will get GRUB, which will let you choose if you want to use Windows or Linux every time you boot.

borked 09-02-2006 08:33 AM

just buy a mac - less complicated :2 cents:

free4porn 09-02-2006 09:25 AM

What is it with you mac people?

Ubuntu is an 'easier to use' Linux distribution based upon Debian. Unless you're a real tech head, it's just a pretty clickable Linux, that's all.

If you are a tech head, it's a nightmare, because they happily put known broken/crashy/troublesome shit (acx100) in their RELEASED stuff.

squishypimp 09-02-2006 10:58 AM

damn that sounds awesome! I will have to check it out.

Yes. It'll reduce the windows partition and make room for itself and then give you dual boot options. If you get the DVD or CD they are live boot and you can try it out first without changing your HD.

Hentaikid 09-02-2006 04:52 PM

I have it on dual boot on my laptop, it's ok but I end up using windows all the time anyhow. Plus I never got wifi to work on it...

Gillespie 09-02-2006 05:01 PM

Yeah, up until now wifi and Linux is a problem. I never managed to get WPA encryption going on any distribution :/

Matt 26z 09-02-2006 05:16 PM

The only recent version of Linix I've tried is Linspire. I used the live cd, I didn't install it. Fun to play around with, but IMO you'd better have it on a secondary computer.
