The man burns in 19 days. Who from GFY is going?
http://randomania.net/BM05/tn_DSC06855_JPG.jpg The annual pilgrimage to the desert of Nevada, known as Black Rock City, begins in just a few days. It's a music and arts festival called Burning Man and a few GFY'ers were considering going this year. So... who's going to make it this year? (Click the images in this post) http://burningman.com/sections/homep...ftcol_bm06.gif |
I've been dieing for a get-away... might have to make the trek this year.
|
I bet Halcyon will be there. I believe he goes every year.
I hate the desert. I can't stand being in it. It depresses me. Therefore, I'll never go to burning man. |
Can't wait to see your pictures! :)
|
Wow! That sounds cool! Be sure to make pics and post them here. :thumbsup
|
Too much fun to handle...
Is the paycom crew going? :winkwink: |

Ahhhh yes, Burning Man. Almost a right of passage living here in So Cal or anywhere near the grounds. I have been wanting to go for years and came close a couple of times, but flakey friends always decided to back out at the last minute. It's a real commitment to go, but I've heard it's totally worth it. Argh! One of these years I'll get there!
|
looks nice ;)
|
Alas, no... have not been since '98. But I'll be watching the glorious conflagration with delight and awe from a distance. 2hp |

One thing I really like about Burning Man is how much of a pain in the ass it is to go.
It's hot. Dirty. Dry. Windy. Out of the way. It requires a lot of planning. It requires a lot of commitment. As far as camping goes, it's a somewhat expensive venture. One you're there, that's it.... you're cut off from the outside world. Hopefully, as long as there are substantial obstacles, only those who really want to be a part of it will attend. |

Hearing Hal's description of it makes it sound like a very cool experience. However this year I definitely can't do it as its too short notice to pull everything together. I'm going to try to make it next year....hopefully.:winkwink: |
Haven't been for a couple years, but it's definately an experience. Don't think there's really anyway to convey to someone what it's like to be there!
|
Have fun Rand :)
|
wasnt that on Family Guy? Being on the east coast, ive never heard of it to be honest, I thought they made it up in Family Guy. Learn something from GFY everyday:1orglaugh
|
I know of about a dozen or so virgin burners (first timers) going this year just from my local circle of friends. From everything I'm hearing, this is going to be a really fun year.
|
that must be interesting!
|
|
You love burning man...looking forward to your pics this year
Mr. Romance |
I wish we were closer.. I know it would be a total blast!!
|
i like the whole idea of being cut off from all the modern amenities of life, besides toilets...what do they have there? portable bathrooms or do you just shit in a bag? anyways i think i would at least want some shade or trees or something other than sand everywhere. i go camping every may 24 weekend and all you have is what you bring and there are washrooms but after the first day, chances are you wouldn't want to use them. i like it, though i would of paid 20 bucks to use a clean washroom but there are lots of trees, shade and a lake. there must be paramedics there, i'd imagine a lot of people have troubles with all the dehydrating drugs and the desert sun.

For one week, Black Rock City is the 5th largest city in Nevada. Population just under 40,000. Yes there are porta-potties, but there are no showers. Everything you need to exist for one week, including the water you bathe in, must be brought in with you -and- taken out as well. There isn't trash collection or receptacles at burning man. However, there is a hospital (med-tent), a fire department, a post office, a DMV (department of mutant vehicles) and an airport. The only things allowed to be sold at BMan are ice (at Camp Arctica) and the beverages sold at Center Camp (tea, coffee, lemonade). You can't buy food at B-man or charge admission for anything. It's an unusual environment that makes the real word look unusual when you come back to it. One of the best things I got from B-Man was my new take on the real world. |
I'll have to check it out, one of these days

I love the pictures and the stories :) I read about Burning Man in Wired probably 8+ years ago and it's always interested me. Just not enough to live w/o air conditioning and running water for more than 12 hours ;)
Have a great time and thanks for always sharing your experiences with us :) |
bet its quite an experience for those first timers. would love to check it out but...

haha -- you know I will. The camp I'm with this year, New Amsterdam, is a very organized villiage with excellent placement. We are part of "Ailien Underground" and our contribution this year is called "Hot Alien Lounge". We are building a bar that will go along with the camps dance club. There are about a dozen DJ's lined up to spin for daytime events. Our address is 7:30 and Destiny. http://burningman.com/sections/homep..._home_pano.jpg The man burns in 18 days. http://www.burningman.com/images/home_logo.gif |
Looks very cool. Would like to go one day. Looking forward to piccies.

A huge pagan themed party in the middle of the desert....on mind bending drugs (don't fucking lie people)
Sounds like my kind of heathen party : ) |
A friend of mine posted this on a site where people were talking about how anxious they are to go to BMan. Hillarious!
dust. hard wind. shitty playa conditions. playa foot. canned food. broken bikes. porta-potties. porta-potty lines. OVERFLOWING porta-potties. tourists that show up on Friday. that mixture of sunscreen and playa dirt. your tent caving in on you from the wind as you sleep. waking up sweating. people that shouldn't be on drugs, on drugs. hippies. goths. ravers. batteries running out. mud in your beer. glowsticks that only half work. people moving the street signs so you get lost. "are you lolling?". dj's trainwrecking. folk players...playing, uh, folk. lines for ice. the same article in piss clear from the last four years. giving up on getting the shower to work right. people taking your bike thinking it's theirs when theirs has a three foot kermit on it and can't be missed. techno ghettoization. "So, what does the temple mean?". cold. white outs. hot. larry harvey. Can't wait! SIDE NOTE: I don't do drugs at Burning Man. To me... it's redundant. That really is an eight foot pink bunny rabbit riding past me in a mobile movie theater showing Barbarella. :thumbsup |
