I picked up a new Nikon D70s today

Picked it up at the B&H store in NYC. It's a replacement for my busted Sony Cybershot I got 3+ years ago.

Holy hell, it's my first digital SLR. Amazing, vibrant colors, such quick response time, virtually no startup time, I love it! :thumbsup

I'll post some pics later.

Kris 08-13-2006 03:37 PM

what lens did you get for it?

X37375787 08-13-2006 04:12 PM

18-70mm AF-S Nikkor ED DX

Congrats on your new camera! Now it starts to REALLY get fun :winkwink:

X37375787 08-13-2006 04:20 PM

Dude, that store has the denses population of jews that I ever seen on a single block! Kickass customer support though, and the overhead railway system makes it look like you're in Disney Land!

Congrats, nice camera:thumbsup

Here is a few sample shots that I took on our NYC bus trip. Note that these pics aren't optimized at all, they come fresh out of the camera. Just resized them a bit. Figured that 3000x2000 shots wouldn't be appreciated.

I haven't even managed to read the quick start guide... I am sure there is many more options that i can set, tweak and improve my photography. Can't wait to play around with it.

By the way, is it better to capture the pictures in the best JPG setting or RAW?

X37375787 08-13-2006 06:06 PM

How do you pro lensmen keep your lenses clean? Any good portable kits that I can use?

I got a UV filter for the lens, too.

DeanCapture 08-13-2006 06:10 PM

Looks like you need to clean your CCD. I see a little black spec in the top right hand side of the pic :Oh crap

Yeah I noticed that, too. I will have to take a look and clean it. :thumbsup Maybe it was on the lens?

Alternatively, I am gonna take it to B&H and have them clean it.

reynold 08-13-2006 06:15 PM

Wow! Awesome sample shots there. Congrats on your new camera. :thumbsup

X37375787 08-13-2006 06:15 PM

Nevermind, I just took a test shot and it turned out fine. Was probably a smudge on the filter that I got rid of later.

Vitasoy 08-13-2006 06:19 PM

Grats on the cam, nice shots

I took mine down to Samy Camera here in LA a few weeks ago to let them clean one of my cameras and the guy opened up the camera and took a look at the CCD with a magnifier that had some lights built into it. He took this little blower and blew off the CCD a few times and that was all it took. He said that my CCD didn't need a "wet cleaning" only needed blown off. He also recommended that if you need to change lenses, first turn off the camera to eliminate any static electricity that might suck anything into the camera when you remove the lens and also...hold the camera upside down when removing lenses so nothing can fall into the camera. Just some thoughts for ya' :winkwink:

Not everyone agrees with this guy, but he does put out some good information. Here is a link on suggestions for setting up the D70...

I have the same camera and it's pretty sweet. My photographer's D200 is much nicer though, I plan on getting one of those soon. :)

funny you should know that,:1orglaugh Be careful when you blow things off that you dont drive the dirt deeper in the camera. The D100 is problematic from time to time with static electricity particles showing up on the pics. I had to have it serviced for this in the past. Not sure if the 70s has the same prob. For cleaning the outside of your lens, the blower is good and a good quality lens cloth, you breathe on the lens till it hazes over , then polish it off in a circular motion till its clean.:thumbsup
