To new window or to not new window? That is the question..

On a picture gallery, what do you think is best? New windows for the pictures or to keep them as _self?

Makingcoin 08-12-2006 10:47 PM

Same window bro!

Makingcoin 08-12-2006 10:48 PM

Are these galleries you are going to be submitting to other sites or just listed on your own? If you are submitting these to other tgp/mgp/blogs I would keep them in the same window.

EdgeXXX 08-12-2006 10:49 PM

Hmmmmm... that's a tough one. _blank is kinda cool because the surfer doesn't have to keep hitting the back button, but it can also get to be a pain in the ass so I guess I would have to say go with _self.

Jace 08-12-2006 10:50 PM

on galleries? same window, always...I have never seen it any other way

JD 08-12-2006 10:51 PM

they're not going to be submitted. just for my blogs n shit

grusthumbs 08-12-2006 10:52 PM

_self so the surfer doesn't have several windows open at once. Having everything open in seperate windows may also feel like pop-ups to some surfers.

good point. how about tour links? I've always thought _self for those.

Lycanthrope 08-12-2006 10:55 PM

That may be, but as an old TGP2er, I can tell you that most sales came off the "satellite" pages than from the main gallery page.

yeah, i know. I've got that whole template thing down. Been using seperate wp coded page templates for a loooooong time :winkwink:

It's just lame having to create new pages for each image in the gallery and assigning it as a child of the main gallery page.

I think you can do this pretty easily with Arylia.

And I'd go with _self. Closing new pages all the time is a real pain...

LOL I use Arylia for some babeblogs I run and honestly, the price is totally worth it because of how much time it saves.

You can change link codes by literally clicking 2 buttons. Check out the demo and you'll see what I mean.

The only thing that I don't like about Arylia, is that it doesn't create wp-pages. They're static pages that are in no way "attached" to wordpress so any wp-sitemap plugin you may be running won't list them. Other than that, Arylia is the shiznit.

edit: i can show you some of my galleries if you want to see some examples. ICQ in sig :thumbsup

Yeah, it's a bit expensive... but once you get all your templates done, you save A LOT of time... and time is money:winkwink:

Oh, my bad... I didn't know you couldn't use it with WP. It would be a great feature for the next version though...

definately a good feature. I've heard rumors that it's in the works but integrating something like that with wordpress is serious undertaking. So I don't expect it happening soon.

I am trying out a plugin for wirdpress right now called wpig

you create galleries in the admin by uploading images, then place a simple code in the page you want to be a gallery and it adds the gallery to that page

I posted a crawl page for arylia over at adx. Just put a link to it at the bottom of your blogs/babelogs for the SE's to spider.

woj 08-13-2006 01:35 AM

when you're creating the page you can select a page parent from the existing pages. So make a new page called "Plugins" or whatever. Then whatever new pages you want to be in that "category" you make them children of the "Plugins" page.

With the WP code that list pages you can pass it a parameter than will list only parent pages. You should be able to do a conditional statement that depending on which parent page the viewer is on, it will display the children of that page.

LOL I'm a little drunk right now so that may or may not make any damn sense. Hit me up in the afternoon and I'll try to explain it a little better.

that is a really good idea....I found this a hour or so ago though

seems to work very nicely

I think if you're linking from a site specific ad page or gallery then it makes sense to link to the sponsor via _self. However if you're linking from a multi-site FPA or hub page with ads for different paysites then I prefer to use _new, because if the surfer doesn't like the tour then you still have a window open with more ads for him to click. I get demonstrably more click throughs from linking via _new vs linking via _self on multi-site ad blocks. If you use _self then you will basically lose the surfer to the sponsor's consoles.

digifan 08-13-2006 05:24 AM

Same window, _self that is :)

jayeff 08-13-2006 06:13 AM

There is a WordPress plugin called Redirectify which lets you include any page within WordPress.

You create a new (empty) page, add a field called redirect and put in the URL of the external page. That's it...

If you don't have too many pages to think about, display different lists and use the exclude option:
Code:

<?php wp_list_pages('exclude=2,4... etc
Otherwise there is a Customizable Post Listings plugin which will likely help.

it will end up being hundreds of pages, at least 1 new one every 2-3 days

John69 08-13-2006 06:48 AM

i use target blank or new, as many sponsors have traps or slow servers.

free4porn 08-13-2006 07:01 AM

def same window mate

Then the plugin to which I linked lower in my post is likely the better answer.
