Where do young professionals live in the bay area?

So, I took a job in Palo Alto and am moving next week. I need some help deciding where I want to live.

San Francisco is out of the question as the commute would kill me. I'm also looking forward to a slightly more suburban life after living in downtown Chicago in the last year.

But, that said, I need to be around young, beautiful, sexually liberated women and some good bars.

So, what are my options? Palo Alto? Santana Row? Los Gatos?

hmm, the west bay is a tough call. i guess any of those cities around that area would do...san mateo, redwood city, palo alto, menlo park, san carlos, belmont...they're all really close together...

It's difficult to say, I've never spent that much time down in that area. San Jose is probably your best bet. All the kids from San Jose State party downtown. There's an area down there with a bunch of bars but I cant tell you exactly where it is.

Sunnyvale, Cuppertino are great if you want a nice place with a more of a professional community...Down Town San jose is good for clubs and bars but the apartments/houses there arn't that great and most are pretty old since they usually rent to college students who dont give a fuck about living quarters.

Mountain View is also good...all depends on your budget, what kind of area you want and how far you want to drive....

Near Standford, dude.

Suprised you even heard about Santana Row, but it's upscale and popular with the chic kinda girls. It's almost like a self-contained village with great resturants, a few hot clubs, and good shopping.

Palo Alto itself is a very nice community, although more subdued. More likely to find rich daughters and Stanford chicks there.

Downtown San Jose now has many nice affordable condos for $350k and up that put you into the thick of San Jose nightlife. With that said, San Jose nightlife can be somewhat gritty and the cops are everywhere, especially at closing time when they literally riot squad people out of downtown. The upside is that violence and crime are quite low for a city of over a million people.

The best nightlife is in San Francisco, but you have to know how to navigate around.

Other than that, mid-peninsula is not bad. Burlingame and Millbrae put you in between San Francisco and the South Bay - so if you want good weather, go South, and if you want nice sites and hard partying go North.

All in all, the Bay Area is a pretty nice place to live except for the occasional earthquake (the last real big one was in '89).

Welcome to the neighborhood...

bay area is too cold, socal is nice though

I would think if you were going to live of equal distance to PA either south or north, you should choose north as I am sure you will want to go to San Fran on wkends...more often than San Jose and so the commute will be that much shorter. A nice clean suburb in the area to check out is Foster City. I used to live there .

The Bay Area is th best overall area in the US pound for pound.

You will have a blast. Santana Row is the place to be if you can afford it.

Now why does that sound good all of a sudden? I think I'll look into sunnyvale and palo alto.

A lot of it will depend on your budget. Los Gatos is nice but expensive. So is Saratoga. You could also rent a place near Stanford which is, of course, in Palo Alto.

Well, I can afford just about anything, I just don't know if I want to throw money on rent. I net monthly income is around $8K.

I currently live in a $1,900 apartment in Chicago.
