Will you check in your laptop?

Let's just say they don't allow you to carry your laptop as carry on baggage, would you trust the airlines to give it the proper care as checked baggage?

Adult Warden 08-10-2006 11:47 PM

No...not to mention them loosing luggage

Trax 08-10-2006 11:49 PM

when u need a reason to get rid of your old laptop, check it in, you wont see it again.

OG LennyT 08-10-2006 11:54 PM

no shit man... I would be putting bubblewrap around my baby

JFK 08-10-2006 11:56 PM

Fucking Ridiculous, you might as well kiss it goodbye:2 cents:

LiveDose 08-10-2006 11:59 PM

I would Fed Ex it before I trusted it to go through the hands of the TSA. It would probably end up in a pawn shop.

StickyGreen 08-11-2006 12:00 AM

hmm, hopefully it won't last long...

L-Pink 08-11-2006 12:00 AM

You can get custom vibration/impact safe cases similar to camera cases ... but ...
Airplane cargo is exposed to temperatures from 0 to 100 plus degrees.

Who knows what type of screening is done to checked baggage.

Business sensitive information is now as secure as your lost luggage.

COMMENTS? .............

BOSS1 08-11-2006 12:00 AM

there is probably a thread on some airport staff board about how they going to make a killing off us... succers

madawgz 08-11-2006 12:01 AM

BOSS1 08-11-2006 12:01 AM

Exactly... Fed Ex it to the hotel. :thumbsup

JFK 08-11-2006 12:02 AM

I am really concerned about my camera equipment:disgust

KRL 08-11-2006 12:03 AM

Fuck no. You'll never see it again and if you do it'll be damaged.

Best thing would be to FedEx it or just fly private with a group and screw flying commercial.

they should just say "fly at your own risk..." and loosen up security. it's getting ridiculous. i know it's for a good cause but c'mon...is it gonna take 4 hours just to get on a flight?

Greg MissionD 08-11-2006 03:26 AM

Thats a really good point and hell no, i just got this one too.

DamageX 08-11-2006 03:29 AM

Ever seen how they handle the luggage? Fuck that, I've had stuff broken in my checked luggage numerous times, no way in hell I'm checking a laptop.

s9ann0 08-11-2006 03:33 AM

Anything I put in my bag I put it in the middle sourrounded by clothes so when they throw it around its padded. Also I think I had a camcorder nicked somewhere. It was just in the bag near the zip I just put it in last minute and I think they just open the zip and have a qiuck feel see if theres anything to take. So I think the further inside you put stuff the safer it will be but that is just a guess.

I keep all my work on PGPdisk drives (about 2GB) so I can copy them onto a DVD or even a CF card and put it in my pocket.

So if your laptop gets fucked you could just reinstlal windows and get the drive off the CF card. I would lose some stuff though like the stupid pics from GFY I downloaded on my desktop

nah didnt you see those hidden videos at la guardia i think it was they worked in teams and fully open and search your bags taking anything valuable while the other baggage dudes put the stuff back in. They know everyone expects it..

Of course theres too many bags for them to check them all in time , but you just get lucky sometimes.. now that they have more sophistcated zray machines for the lower baggage they can spot expensive items on the xray and send them to be scooped..

I don't think they would even let you take these through on your person at the moment, would they?

sacX 08-11-2006 04:39 AM

i've flown plenty of long-haul (anywhere out of NZ usually is), take my notebook/ipod on board but don't use them, one or one and a half good sleeping pills and no worries :).

Adultnet 08-11-2006 04:52 AM

Why 08-11-2006 05:09 AM

i checked a laptop for the first time a couple weeks ago on an hour long flight from zhahaha252;rich to Vienna. thought it would be safe on swiss airlines. that was the first time in my entire life that i lost my luggage, luckily it was found and nothing was missing or damaged. but didnt put much faith in swiss air for me.

Flying to the UK tomorrow. Have to check in everything. Packing my laptop in a thick, foam-lined box and praying it doesn't get fucked up. Packing all other electronics in as much padding as possible in the other baggage.

Fucking fuck fuck. :( Don't even think they'll allow me to carry on a book. I hope that's not the case though when I get to the airport and ask about it.

E$_manager 08-11-2006 08:53 AM

No, i wouldn't. I had bad experiense with my normal baggage almost evrytime i flew.

gooddomains 08-11-2006 08:55 AM

HpicAnn 08-11-2006 09:34 AM

Nooooo. I used to work for an airline and they don`t really care about your luggage. The most important thing for them is to send your luggage on time.

Yup I did this on the way to and back from Florida. I know I was taking a big risk but all was good. :)

BVF 08-11-2006 12:00 PM

they search your checked baggage anyway..my kids bag got searched on our way to puerto rico and I would've never known if they didn't put a notice in the bag saying that they searched it. It also said that if you have a lock on your luggage and they can't open it, they'll BREAK the lock if your bag is chosen for a random search.

Kimmykim 08-11-2006 12:03 PM

No. Not a chance.

pussyluver 08-11-2006 12:03 PM

When it comes down to it, it's the HD that counts! That's where your info is. Maybe you don't want someone reviewing the content on your laptop....

There are shock resistant hard drives. Think Acer offers them and others. so it's more the content that protecting physically. You would have a backup of course.

What's legal in the Netherlands, may not be in the states, so if they look at the data, there could be a problem. Plus all the other info - Statsremote etc. info shared with IRS!!! You know damn well there would be some sample checking or looking at at info on the HD.

How about this, you layover in the bible belt and end up in jail for possession of obscene pics..
