comus is really good, but very complicated
smart much easier to use, but has less options

hard to tell what's better, i'm using both

Comus is a very mature product (it's been around forever). It's pretty indepth though.

Comus bloated. It's got shit in there that not only will you never use, but will have a hell of a time understanding.

Smart Thumbs > Comus

Smart Thumbs > Comus

what is it that you never use, or is it better to only offer what you need with no options to do more?

RogerV 08-08-2006 10:41 PM

Comus all the way

Comus rocks and it has killer support... Tony is awesome :thumbsup

gooddomains 08-09-2006 12:18 AM

both are good

Smart Thumbs gets my vote. It has a ton of features and is less clunky.

Tuga 08-09-2006 12:46 AM

Comus is great and I have a cheap license for sale.

Comus is good, but ST has to be the most intuitive TGP Script w/ the most advanced options in the industry. They have the absolute best support and three guys that care alot about giving quality support to its customers. Their update function is the easiest, the niche and archive pages are amazing, the cropping features are extremely streamlined and ready for easy fast thumb generation. Packed with awesome template makers/editors and logging tools as well as statistics packages, this script is bar none, DA SHIT. =)

Having used both extensively, here's my take on it:

Comus offers a lot more flexibility, in the ways you can query your gallery database, display your thumbs, update your site and so on. On the downside, it can be a tad heavy on the server, when all bells and whistles are in use, as long as it takes longer to fully master.

Smart Thumbs is a piece of cake to run, even if it has gotten more advanced options lately. Regardless, it still offers quite a bit less flexibility in updates and display than Comus does. However, it's a kick-ass script when it comes to speed, making efficient use of server resources and getting your best thumbs up on top.

If anyone would ask me whether to pick one over the other, my answer would be another question: How do you want to run your site? If you want to take submissions, do daily updates and schedule them for a long time ahead, then Comus is for you. If you want to rotate FHG's mainly, without much regard to submitted galleries, and you want it done with as little work as possible, then Smart Thumbs is a much better choice.

As I said, they're both GREAT scripts, you just need to know which to choose, depending on your particular intention in terms of how to run your site.

Thanks, now we know what to fix in ST to make it best of both worlds :-)

Just don't do that at the expense of speed and being light on the system. :winkwink:

But offcoz not! it just needs clever coding and it can be done without speed loss or server resources..
I think for the most part it's just tweaking the system anyway..

The less you make it rely on incompetent hosts, the better the chances of everyone being able to use it well.
