How will they afford cigarettes?!!

Employers in Europe are free to refuse smokers a job, confirming their status as the continent's last pariahs.

I was under the impression smoking was extremely popular in Europe. Can any Europeans confirm or deny?

that's a bit general, we used to have less restrictions on smoking but luckily they're wising up and making some good choices. Still, smoking in restaurants etc is still not banned so we have a long way to go.

NoCarrier 08-06-2006 04:54 PM

Stopped smoking 5 years ago..

Best decision ever..

Fuck the tobacco companies.

I mean christ, yes, we smoke, but idiotic drunk drivers kill more people than smokers do. Don't smoke here, don't smoke there blah blah blahh... Oh but feel free to drink and drive home.. thanks for coming.. haha..

that aint the point being made in this thread - they say smokers are stupid because despite the warnings they still smoke.

But if you dont exagerate it you will not get cancer. If you dont exagerate drinking alcohol you will not get korsakoff and liver problems. If you dont exagerate eating fat food you will not get heart problems.

So therefore the statement that smoking is idiotic is idiotic.

NOTR 08-06-2006 05:51 PM

Many companies in the USA have a non smoking policy. Cuts down benefits dramatically.

http://www.illinoissmokersrights.com...ep_my_job.html

Weyco is just one of many. Smokers cost $$ when it comes to benefits, either pass the difference onto the workers or ban it all together.

Actually it happened here in Michigan. An employer here told his employees last summer that they had till the end of the year to quit smoking... In Jan. everyone got a tobacco test, those that failed were fired. There was a huge lawsuit about it, but I havent heard anything on that front in awhile...

Didn't know that there were over 100 known poison in alcohol, too. Damn, that's news to me, where did you get that information from, I'd like to learn more about the poisons in alcohol.

reynold 08-06-2006 06:24 PM

It's been two years since I put down my last tobaco stick. That's one of the best decisions I did in my life.

35,000 to 40,000 deaths per year in the United States in the early 1980s caused by Second Hand Smoke [Source: Wikipedia]
This is not couting how many actual smokers die per year.

16,694 alcohol-related fatalities im 2004

You = Wrong.

Brujah 08-06-2006 06:30 PM

For countries with a socialized form of healthcare, this makes even more sense. Everyone has to pay the burden for smokers.

they never have proof that its of second hand smoke, if you wanna die of second hand smoke you need to be chained to a chain smoker 24 hours a day for 10 years and maybe then its possible

What makes you say they don't have proof? Please state your source.

Oh that's right, your source is your personal opinion. Here are some facts for you, with sources, you know, that thing you lack:

Fact #1: Secondhand smoke, also know as environmental tobacco smoke, is a mixture of the smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers. It is involuntarily inhaled by nonsmokers, lingers in the air hours after cigarettes have been extinguished and can cause or exacerbate a wide range of adverse health effects, including cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma.

Source: California Environmental Protection Agency. Health Effects of Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke. September 1997.

Fact #2: Secondhand smoke has been classified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as a known cause of cancer in humans (Group A carcinogen).

Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Respiratory Health Effects of Passive Smoking: Lung Cancer and Other Disorders. December 1992.

Fact #3: Secondhand smoke causes approximately 3,000 lung cancer deaths and 35,000-62,000 heart disease deaths in adult nonsmokers in the United States each year.

Source: California Environmental Protection Agency. Health Effects of Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke. September 1997.

Fact #4: Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to young children. Secondhand smoke is responsible for between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age, resulting in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year, and causes 1,900 to 2,700 sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) deaths in the United States annually.
