quiet 06-13-2002 02:49 AM

what do you think of the new Lexus SC 430 convertible?

I am looking at buying one in the next couple of weeks (will take at least a month to get the color i want though). the car is growing on me, looks really sweet at the dealership.

it's not a sports car (and i'm not looking for one, i'm keeping my S2000 for tearing around in) - just a great car to cruise/travel long distance in. also considered the MB CLK 430 conv - but they are coming out with a brand new one next year, and i don't want to wait that long ;)

quiet 06-13-2002 03:11 AM

machine - i love the sl500 - but while i guess i could afford one, they are a little more than i want to pay. but i really, really would love to get one. i think i like cars too much ;)

blackrose - in the US, i think around 33K new. yes, it's a really sweet car.

The Machine 06-13-2002 03:13 AM

the lexus is good, but it's still a lexus - they try to imitate the real thing with every new car they produce (frankly all lexus designs are stolen merc designs - e.g. 430 is slk). the SL is a better choice in every aspect - power, luxury, speed, exclusivity, beauty. its 30k more, but that shouldn't be a problem for you.

Blackrose 06-13-2002 03:13 AM

i would have to post again after seeing the new benz ... im still at awe ... a sweet fucking ride !!! I could fuck a star with that :winkwink: how much is it in the market ?

The Machine 06-13-2002 03:14 AM

you posted before me there, quiet;)

yes, the price is a bit steep - but with cars it's all about how much you want it.

Dirty F 06-13-2002 03:14 AM

Dont take that ugly piece of shit Lexus...go with the 500SL...i wouldnt have to think 1 sec about that.

Blackrose 06-13-2002 03:15 AM

Only friggin 33k ? here in my country, they are selling at almost twice the price there in the US ... fucking sucks !!!

I should move there .... but i hate the IRS LOLOL :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

no doubt, the sl is more exlcusive. and so - classic. though for the money, the lexus is also exlcusive, and incredibly well engineered. i've looked at ordering an sl - i would be on a long waiting list to get the color i'd want.

one thing though - the sc430 is meant to be a direct competitor for the clk430 - not the slk. then new clk looks so sweet - but a year till it's ready for purchase :(

i don't agree. this lexus is really beautiful. better looking than the current mb clk 430 (it's natural competitor). the sl500 is, of course, in another league.

The Machine 06-13-2002 03:22 AM

yep, but the design is all slk ;)

and the 430 is listed as a 55-65k car in the us - it's not that cheap either (not that i've checked in an actual dealership).

i'd say the design is much more audi tt than slk. yes, the sc430 isn't cheap, but it's much cheaper than the sl500. about the same price as a clk 430...

The Machine 06-13-2002 03:26 AM

but quiet, why not do both - you can buy the 430 now, drive it while you're waiting for your SL order, then sell it - this way you'll get to try everything (of course some money will be lost, but hey, gotta have fun ;)

If you want to buy a Mercedes, buy yourself one with a decent manual gearbox. Or get yourself a German import. If you are going to buy an automatic, you are NOT worth it.

Sebastian.

(1) there is no such thing. the slk's manual is purportedly mb's best stick - have you driven the manual - what a piece of shit.

(2) if you had read this thread, i already own an S2000 - rated as having one of the best shifting manual transmissions on the planet. no mb will ever come close to it - and of course, i am not looking for another sports car. mb doesn't build them.

Seb From Holland 06-13-2002 04:37 AM

I knew my remark would get you angry. Don't see it as an attack. Buy whatever you want. It's just my opinion. But if you would go for the Lexus... that's not a bad choice.

By the way, the Honda S2000 is an American car, which is not produced in Europe. I wouldn't know anything about it. I didn't mention it too.

Seb.

your remark didn't make me angry. and the S2000 is a japanese car, built by hand, in the same factory as the NSX. it's not an american car. but please enlighten me as to an mb with a sweet shifting manual. none exist.

sad but true.

Seb From Holland 06-13-2002 04:41 AM

I also want to add one thing. The Mercedes SLK/CLK cars ARE seen as sports cars in Europe. Japanese brands like Mazda, Honda etc. do not produce sports lines here, like Honda does with the S2000 or Toyota does with the Supra.

as i told you the S2000 is sold in Britain.

Britain is not a bad place at all, even though i'm not from there ;)

Seb From Holland 06-13-2002 04:45 AM

We don't count Britain as Europe, I'm talking about the mainland. If you want to be Europe, accept our Euro.

"The Mercedes SLK/CLK cars ARE seen as sports cars in Europe"

yeap, very true

Seb From Holland 06-13-2002 04:53 AM

I can images Americans don't see Mercedes as sportcars. It may not look as agressive as a Honda S2000. But then again, you have speed limits which makes us laugh. I bet you could never get a Mercedes Benz to drive 150-160 mph. I think you'd consider it a sportcar then.

If you want to give it a try, come over to Holland with your Benz and we'll spend the weekend on the German autobahn. It's a nice feeling. :)

Sebastian.

i would consider the slk a 'sort of' sports car. the clk - not at all. sports cars (imo) are light, 2 seaters, convertible, rear wheel drive, with loud/beautiful sounding engines, complete with sweet manual transmissions.

you guys (i think) have the lotus elise - now there is a sports car!! not available in Canada :(

driving the way you are describing is 'gt' driving in my mind. a good drive in a sports car is all about low speed, tight turns, on a deserted road. and a manual is a must. you can't even get a manual with the clk, and the slk's is garbage.
