In September 2002, he was arrested for driving under the influence of GHB. The arresting officer's report notes that Nolte was "completely out of it. He was drooling, [with] droopy eyes". Nolte's lawyer said he had ingested the drug unwittingly, as part of a "weight-lifting concoction".
