Why do you guys pronounce the word "Niche" like neesh...and Americans pronounce it like nitch?

both are valid. http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/niche

Because nitch sounds like another way of explaining how one has a wicked rash, or "itch". Neesh sounds more reasonable.

You pronounce "rich", 'ritch'
So why would you pronounce "niche" the same way?

Canadians spell and pronounce many worlds differently. "Colour" is how they spell color, for example. They're a different country, see.

I pronounce it niche ... I'm french canadian.

I always found that strange, but then I remembered, I don't really care that much. Different strokes for different folks.

'niche' is originally a French word meaning 'shelter'. The right way to pronounce it is 'neesh' and not 'nitch'. There is a lot of words that comes from the French language and used by English ppl unproperly. Then again same for English words integrated in the French language.

I say neesh. Nitch just sounds wrong to my ears.

We had a teacher in middle school that said ruff...was made fun of all the time

damn its like 101 all over.. going from french pronounciation to english heh.. thought Id get away from that comin to CR.. lol

lol reminds me of a time I was talking on the phone with a chick from california, she wouldnt stop making fun of the way I talked, things I nevered noticed. but she thought it was cute/cool.. whatever.

Get the same stuff almost every time I speak to folks in the US - phrases get repeated back in an attempted mimic :winkwink:

And.. while on the subject - got to say, people in the US are *very* polite - least the one's I speak to :)
