Question for Canadians

Why do you guys pronounce the word "Niche" like neesh...and Americans pronounce it like nitch?

Agent 488 07-31-2006 01:37 PM

both are valid. http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/niche

BradM 07-31-2006 01:37 PM

Because nitch sounds like another way of explaining how one has a wicked rash, or "itch". Neesh sounds more reasonable.

Kevsh 07-31-2006 01:42 PM

You pronounce "rich", 'ritch'
So why would you pronounce "niche" the same way?

:)

JFK 07-31-2006 01:44 PM

Because we speak the Queens English and we are right:thumbsup

JuggernautXUG 07-31-2006 01:45 PM

I pronounce it as "neesh"

Mr. Soul 07-31-2006 01:45 PM

Canadians spell and pronounce many worlds differently. "Colour" is how they spell color, for example. They're a different country, see.

Doctor Dre 07-31-2006 01:45 PM

I pronounce it niche ... I'm french canadian.

Beejeebers 07-31-2006 01:53 PM

Why do some americans pronounce roof as ruff? Does a dog say woof or wuff?

I always found that strange, but then I remembered, I don't really care that much. Different strokes for different folks.

Wiggles 07-31-2006 01:57 PM

wow had no clue americans pronounced it like that.

Mediachick 07-31-2006 02:02 PM

'niche' is originally a French word meaning 'shelter'. The right way to pronounce it is 'neesh' and not 'nitch'. There is a lot of words that comes from the French language and used by English ppl unproperly. Then again same for English words integrated in the French language.

Sarah_Jayne 07-31-2006 02:04 PM

I say neesh. Nitch just sounds wrong to my ears.

You're kidding right?

If "rich" was spelled "riche" you would have a point.

Get the same stuff almost every time I speak to folks in the US - phrases get repeated back in an attempted mimic :winkwink:

And.. while on the subject - got to say, people in the US are *very* polite - least the one's I speak to :)

maja 07-31-2006 04:31 PM

I've always pronounced it "Neesh", but you knew that already!

Well... Mag is not exactly a tall girl and she has to bang this sword on your shoulder, - least that's what I'd prefer to believe.

BUT if it means creeping and being subserviant - well, I'm really cheap that way :pimp

Bollocks -
(vulgar; originally ballocks) testicles; verbal rubbish (as in "you're talking bollocks"). The somewhat similar bollix is found in American English, but without the anatomical connotations or vulgar sense, meaning 'mess up'.
Especially handy for all religous and political threads

Kimo 07-31-2006 08:07 PM

i say nitch
