ICQ fucked up BIG TIME!

Well... I've never had an ICQ problem until now...

Today when I fire up ICQ, I get a message saying that I must now upgrade to ICQ 5.1 for me to continue using the program.

Alright, whatever. Same old shit.

I download the file and begin upgrading. Then at 91% I get an error message saying that a certain file cannot be opened and the Install closes.

So now here's the fun part : I can't open ICQ cause the old version is overwritten by 5.1, and 5.1 doesn,t work cause it doesn't fully install.

and here's the kicker : when I go to the directory where the corrupted file is apparently located, my computer asks me if I want to format the drive :upsidedow

Hurray for ICQ...

sounds like a corrupt file system

baddog 07-31-2006 10:21 AM

what version were you using before?

ElvisManson 07-31-2006 10:22 AM

I had the same issue. I uninstalled (through add/remove programs) the latest version that screwed up..and went to icq and downloaded it again and it worked fine.

Yup, I'm just afraid of losing my contact list and history

I don't keep history on..so i don't know if this solution will delete it or not...it didn't fuck up my contacts.

NoWhErE 07-31-2006 10:54 AM

haha, this is terrific, everytime I try uninstalling ICQ, it freezes up my system and I have to reboot.

This is going to be a lovely day

Here's your fix, Jason.

System restore ;)

stickyfingerz 07-31-2006 10:56 AM

Install trillian. You'll be happy in the long run. :2 cents:

icq contacts are stored remotely, you should be ok

WWC-Pajio 07-31-2006 11:43 AM

...damn.. that's weird!!

Crypt 07-31-2006 11:48 AM

Dont use the original ICQ client.

Get trillian pro or if you are cheap Miranda.

I used Trillian pro for years, and now using Miranda, really more stable

Actually, I had deactivated system restore a long time ago when trying to get rid of some spyware and forgot to turn it back on :disgust

BobG 07-31-2006 12:23 PM

I've done system restores, uninstall/reinstall several times over and my ICQ is still fucked up.

babymaker 07-31-2006 12:23 PM

Doctor Dre 07-31-2006 12:30 PM

Why don't you just uninstall and re-install it ? tried that ?

Your contact list is stored on the server, and you can backup your history just look on icq.com how too ;)
