"Miami Vice" Was fucking awesome...Michael Mann does it again.

Consider this point -- counterpoint.

Miami Vice was fucking awesome, I didn't even get up to take a piss during the film.

The entire thing was shot on Hi Def DV, which should be a fucking inspiration to all you content producers to see what Mann can do with the same equipment you guys use on a daily basis.

Every shot was composed within an inch of its life.

The sound design and sound track were utterly unique. From the roar of a Ferrari F430 zipping down the Intercoastal, to the thunder of a Chevy 502 in the back of a speedboat, to the report and impact of every damn bullet in a gunfight...it was stunning.

The dialogue was pure Miami Vice -- straight out of a pulp crime thriller. I have no idea how Mann did this but he actually conveys exactly how hot and humid Miami is.

I'm claiming Miami Vice is the best movie of the summer.

nico-t 07-29-2006 12:52 PM

i knew there would be some that likes this flick... thats why i never listen to reviews of other peeps, whether negative or positive, i always gotta see it myself. It's a matter of personal taste, people!

Miami Vice sucked donkey balls.

The original Miami Vice had style, class, and a killer soundtrack. While I understand it's outdated by today's standards, the movie all over had nothing to do with the original TV show other than the fact that one cop was white and one cop was black.

Good to hear. Juicy said it sucked.

notabook 07-29-2006 01:06 PM

M.V. is getting 50% reviews across the board, it seems it'll be a toss up if you actually care for it or not. I have not seen it yet, may go see it next weekend if I have time but from the sounds of it I'll probably be one of the haters.

Basic_man 07-29-2006 01:12 PM

I'll need to see it to do my own opinion :)

justinsain 07-29-2006 01:17 PM

There seems to be a big difference in opinion for this movie.

Although I haven't seen it yet, I'll go see it without any expectations just as I do with any other movie. That way I can judge the movie for what it is and not what I wanted it to be.

That was my worry. If they were gonna call it 'Miami Vice' and losely base it on the TV prog then it also needs the style and tunes of the original. If they don't exist then I probably won't waste my time.

A bit like the Italian Job remake. It would have been an okish film to maybe watch on DVD if there hadn't the connection to the brilliant original. As it was though you sat through it thinking how much more you enjoyed the original.

I really dig Michael Mann's "immersive" directorial style where rich imagery and vivid soundtrack merge seamlessly with the narrative. His movies have that 'velvety' feel to it. Good velvet, mind you, not the kind you see on paintings of dogs playing poker ;)

John69 07-29-2006 02:29 PM

what movie did you see? that was the worst filmed movie i have ever seen.

That's what I'M saying!

From the night club scenes in Havana -- the bodies pressing in on you, music surrounding you -- to the gun fight at the end where you hear the report and percussion of all the weapons in the battle and then you hear the plink and tink of bullets hitting the cars and containers.

I have to say in my opinion if you didn't LOVE this movie than you aren't a real movie fan at all, you're just a person who watches movies.

Look at the critics grade, I rest my case.

Bring it.

Nookster 07-29-2006 09:06 PM

I still haven't seen it yet but I don't doubt at all that it's a great flick. HEAT is my all time favorite flick and I can't wait to see Miami Vice. :thumbsup

The gunfight at the end of Miami Vice is NEARLY as good as the one near the end of Heat. HOWEVER, it is not the same at all, proving how much Michael Mann is THE man.

I noticed the camrea shook alot. I'm glad it didn't do it for long periods or I wouldhave gotten motion sick, like watching a home video.

KRL 07-29-2006 10:23 PM

OK, just got back from seeing it.

There were just a couple really good parts. The shootout near the end was really well done. Sound effects were awesome.

But, most of the movie was just lame and weird. The bad guys were totally goofballs and when they got killed at the end everyone cheered I think just that we didn't have to see them in the film anymore. LOL

The love relationship with the asian chick was really goofy because she comes off at first as this hardcore high level dealer and next thing she's fucking Sonny. It just wasn't believable.

The movie had some really bad editing. It felt like they put scenes in just to fill space and give the movie its necessary length. You could have easily chopped an hour out and not missed anything relevant.

Usually films like this have some fantastic chase scenes. This had none. You could tell they chomped out on the budget as much as they could to make this movie.

On a 1 to 10, I'd give this about a 3. And for fuck's sake, whoever did the casting for this movie sucked, especially with picking Colin Farrel as the star. What a dud actor. Jamie was better but not much.

I took that as an homage to the shaky ass battle footage we see from Iraq on CNN or Cops and I liked it.

Obviously on a $150 mil picture if you want Steadicam you GET Steadicam. So the shaky handheld stuff was on purpose. If you watch the last battle scene, it's been constructed to look and sound like news footage from a war zone.

Exactly, take the movie HEAT (which he also produced) for example. It was made that way on purpose. Some people just don't get that kind of shit I guess. I love his flicks. :2 cents:

Just got home from seeing it..

Two thumbs up :thumbsup :thumbsup

This was easily the best movie i've seen this year. Going into it I was super critical because of some things I had heard. I was expecting cool cinematography and a shitty movie. What I got instead was AMAZING cinematography and an actual really good movie.

At the end of the movie I heard some people grumbling about how long it was and some other stuff (granted they were ALL 17 year old kids). I just don't see that at all. I felt like it went by super fast and if I could pony up to go see Miami Vice 2 right now...i'd be at the theater :thumbsup

Michael Mann is a genious of film for sure :upsidedow

If you're going to kill some time and see a summer movie, its ok for that.

But if you're expecting to see a top notch film that will become a classic, not even in the same universe.

Half the movie is totally B O R I N G.

Several people even got up and left half way through in the theater I was in.

MaddCaz 07-30-2006 12:49 PM

so you normally take a piss during film?

Miami Vice is not a hollywood movie that is "dumbed down" to the lowest common denominator fan

Miami Vice has NOTHING to do with the TV SHOW

That will automatically eliminate many of the movie goers. For everyone else....REALLY cool movie :thumbsup
