Best Horror Movies Ever?
I'd have to say "The Shining" is right near the top. Kubrick was a genius, and the flick was downright creepy.

I don't really like the horror genre that much, and prefer the less graphic, more psychological style of the older scary movies.
Of the newer movies, I have to say that I did enjoy, "Bram Stoker's Dracula", and also the movie "Interview with the Vampire". There's too much sadism and gratuitous violence in most horror movies for me to enjoy them. ADG Webmaster |
STRANGELAND.. it is SOOOOO SCARY!!!!

Awesome movie! The Thing, They Live, and Big Trouble in Little China also great John Carpenter films. |
My vote also goes to The Exorcist. The special edition with the added scenes was downright creepy (Linda Blair 'walking' upside down and limbs backwards was off-the-scale).
A close runner up would be John Carpenter's remake of The Thing. The first and second Omen flicks were also very good. |
House of 1000 Corpses, The Devils Rejects, Halloween 1 & 2, and my personal all time favorite It's Alive! The camera work was before its time. :2 cents:

My favorite horror movie ever
The Descent if you haven't seen it yet...it's a must see movie (only at night tough, with good speakers) |
The Descent... I actually let out a bit of a scream at one point. The only time a film has done that to me.
Other good ones: Alien, Wrong Turn, The Ring (US), Dark Water (JP), The Fly. Not my favourite genre at all though. |

Best horror movies, so I'm going to be selective (instead of mentioning my favorites like zombie flesh eaters, susperia, hills have eyes, i spit on your grave, the howling, dark man, and so on). The best horror movies, in my opinion, are those which bring something new to the genre and, thus, further it in some way.
My top 25 (in no order): - Psycho - Jaws - Texas Chainaws Massacre - The Night of the Hunter - Bride Of Frankenstein - The Thing - The Birds - Night Of The Living Dead - Dawn Of the Dead - Evil Dead 1 and 2 (I'll Count as one) - Halloween - Dracula (1931 Lugosi vers.) - Freaks - Lost Boys - Friday the 13th - The Fly - Hellraiser - Last House On The Left - Nightmare On Elm Street - Near Dark (my favorite vampire flick to date) - An American Werewolf In London - The Hitcher - Dead Ringers - The Exorcist - The Haunting (1963 vers.) |
Prince of Darkness by John Carpenter...freaky as hell

Seeing as how ppl are putting "Jaws" and "Alien" on the list, I'd include those two near my top as they are simply fantastic movies.
|
One of the movies that I really like was Ghost ship. It is not that scarry of a movie, but was so different that it was amazing
Oh yeah, and the one chick has great tits. |
Wes Craven's the Serpent and The Rainbow.
|
As a kid, the most horrifying movies I ever saw were Poltergeist and Nightmare on Elm Street. Both gave me fucking nightmares for days.
As an adult, I'd have to say Dawn of the Dead ('04). For some reason, after I watched it at home, every time I closed my eyes that night there were zombies. Can't say it was a better movie than the Shining or others of such fame, but from a nightmare aspect, it left me ruined for a night or two. |

Alien would be both sci-fi and horror. There's a scene where they are in some long tube-like passage, and at a choice moment the alien appears, his jaws open, teeth slathering. In the theater I was in several girls literally pissed in their seats. All classic horrror in my book. |
Ghost Ship and 13 Ghosts were pretty good.
I loved Sixth Sense, by the way. |
