Who invented the first automobile?

This should be interesting with the GFY folk.

On a Mustang message board there was a discussion about who invented the first automobile. Setting aside what I learned in grade school and doing some quick research on Al Gore's Internet thingy I found some interesting ideas on who invented the automobile.

What does everyone here think?

candyflip 07-27-2006 07:42 PM

Karl Benz who later merged his startup company with competitor Gottlieb Daimler's. They formed Daimler-Benz, but later changed it to Mercedes Benz. Mercedes was the daughter of Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek, who was one of Karl's business partner.

:) :thumbsup

Hard to believe that's a Mercedes isn't it. LOL

KRosh 07-28-2006 11:11 AM

It all depends on your interpretation of an automobile.
Daimler-Benz invented the first practical internal combustion automobile.

In 1860 a Frenchman, Edouard Delamare-Debouteville, did some experiments and filed some patents for a self-propelled car. In 1884 France built the world's first car. However the first self-propelled automobile existed long before 1884.
