How do you COMPETE?

Do you compare yourself to others and use their achievements as milestones for your own achievements? OR...

Do you compare yourself to your past milestones and appraise your success accordingly? OR...

a mix of both?

BOSS1 07-22-2006 04:04 PM

a mix of both

J. Falcon 07-22-2006 04:09 PM

Interesting question...

This one is the only one, if you did great things in the past you can do them again.

UniversalPassLorence 07-22-2006 04:33 PM

Do you factor in differing circumstances and inputs when choosing which way to go?

reynold 07-23-2006 07:27 PM

I'd rather look at my past achievements as my standard and get motivations from them.

fuck comparisons you are who you are

make yourself what you want to be, not a clone of someone else

Doctor Dre 07-23-2006 10:25 PM

I always used to compare myself to others to be happy... but why not just be you and try too improve yourself everyday ?

madawgz 07-23-2006 10:26 PM

forsure a mix of both :)

fallenmuffin 07-23-2006 10:27 PM

I don't compare myself to others.. that would be a waste of time. I'm me I set goals for me that would be best for me and I work on them.

Billy doing x,y,z isn't going to help me.. with what i need.

We always look forward on how to do better. Not sure we always achieve it but set the target high and a near miss is still very good. Hitting it is great.

Egomancer 07-23-2006 11:28 PM

Compare myself with my past milestones and I need to evolve!

I set my own goals. Everyone's cirsumstances are different. So far I've done a hell of a lot and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.

The pyschology of message boards is interesting. Ask a certain question and most people who respond will choose the "right" answer that was implicit in the question or first post.

In this context, a couple of weeks ago someone asked who had cheated (at school, college, etc) and the majority said yes, even if most said only a little. Cheating makes no sense if you are your own judge, so you get one picture from that thread and another from this.

Despite the overwhelming number of people here saying they compete with themselves or "both", in reality the vast majority of people do not judge themselves by their own standards. It's contrary to human nature and you only need look around to see people constantly seeking peer approval in everything they do.

You could take it a stage further. Fewer people exceed the expectations you could reasonably have of them according to their economic circumstances at birth, than fail to reach those expectations. You could therefore argue that most people do not, in any wide sense, compete at all: certainly not very successfully. That again is human nature, a consequence of our being communal animals and as such, relatively few are genetically coded to be leaders. Most are coded to be followers.

I base my achievements on how I feel more than anything else. I've worked jobs that paid me tons of money, but I was miserable. I worked jobs that paid me next to nothing, but I was happy. So for me the drive to compete or achieve is more or less a drive to find a place that I'm enjoying what I'm doing.

If you enjoy doing something the achievements and milestones come naturally and a lot faster.

I can see the logic in this.

martinsc 07-24-2006 03:07 AM

i don't think i've ever compared myself to anybody else...
i don't like the idea of "beeing like others". i try to be myself and work by my own goals...

Finike 07-24-2006 03:11 AM

I do both too.
I compare the sugnip and rebill ratios with my cometitors and there I am the #1

Tom_PM 07-24-2006 07:48 AM

I just picked out the applicable business interpretation. Setting up-against numbers to use as guides for increased sales and profit. I use my own, not someone elses.

As far as keeping up with the joneses; screw the joneses.

Some people buy cars for status, I dont. So if someone compared my car to theirs and think they're more successful, well that only shows that their car is a status symbol to THEM.

There is no industry-standard rule of "success".

Passing someone elses milestone only means you're on the wrong road. Get back on your own.:warning

rants 07-28-2006 05:51 PM

I compete by looking at other people, how much money they make, what car they drive, how good looking they are and what they wear.

It's all about keeping up with the Jones'.

I honestly have to admit that for me it's all driven by other people.

Just even thinking about that ex and how they used to put you down cause you weren't rich enough. It would be an orgasmic experience to drive by in your new luxury car in spit in their fucken ugly zitty face to show them how far you've come. And to show them what they've lost. And to show them what they can never have. And how you have more than they ever will. And to spit in their ugly face. And spit again. And again.

And fucken spit in his fucken ugly face again so he can see how fucken far I've come and what a fucken loser he still is.

I think of all the people that underestimated me and all the exes that have wronged me in the past.

To be honest, most people do compete and are competitive. I feel most people will deny it because it's very vain and superficial to do so, but most people do compete like this. It's innate human nature. Most people would not admit to it publically but they do compete or keep mental notes in their mind. I don't see how you can't. Most people I know are competitive. Most of my friends are competitive. Most people are just competitive by nature.

I think there's nothing wrong with it, if it drives you to work harder.

Most people do look at other people and see how they measure up. I don't see how you can't. Most people I know are like this.

I try to fulfill all my dreams. I guess I compete against them. I also try to improve myself all the time, not only from a materialistic prospective.

I do a bit a both. But I think it's human nature to try and compete against others.

I think it's good to look up at others and try to compete and better yourself...but the trick is to understand that there will always be someone bigger and better than you...always. So u need to find peace with yourself and be happy with what you have accomplished without comparing it to others achievements.

Reach for the stars and even when u miss you're still quite up there above and beyong the norm.

Though I take enjoyment seeing '01 folk messages, I take even greater enjoyment seeing '01 folk post quality messages.

Blah blah blah. ;)

With that:

I compete with all those who have done what I wish to do before me. Currently, that vague statement means that I emulate and try and make better that which I respect in regard to web development. No money. No glory. Just knowledge.

The only reason I do the above is because I dig dissecting stuff and I like rebuilding stuff with a new twist / better implementation. Nothing special. My goal, however, is to "happen" upon the point of innovation that no other saw / realized. Albeit, most likely, an unattainable goal, I'll be savage at what I do regardless.

All the above and I truly snap when I under perform my own hopes. However, a "hope" unattained is still a "hope", so I'll always have that going for me.
