18 month online startup, sold for 580 million !!! wtf
Back in 2003, half of the VC's in silicon valley were chasing the idea that the web could connnect people to one another, rather than to information. It took a couple of Los Angeles hipsters to give abstraction - dubbed online social networking - a seriously viral form. Anderson and Dewolfe grandually cobbled together the iltimate web-services mashup. It was a free-for-all of blogging, instant messaging, phonecam uploads,mp3, video clips, and anything new that came along, all stewing in a both of hot bands, hit movies and teenage lovelies. MySpace.com was bought by News Corp. Rupert Murdoch. Think & Prosper from your next brilliant idea! :thumbsup |
The Net is Golden. :thumbsup

I keep looking at the date of this post and am still not 100% convinced it's not an error.

The sad thing is that if they had held on to it for a while longer and invested some VC money into it, they could be sitting on a site worth about 10 times what Murdoch paid.

what they should have done is value the company higher, they already have the site positioned in the top 5 highest trafficed sites, without spending a dime to advertise... I would have asked for 1 billion, they did get alot 580 million, but they could have almost doubled it. |

Great concept -- user generated content + user generated traffic + ads + user-centric tools = $$$
|
tom is the fucking man
|
Proof that truely good ideas go unnoticed and the shitty onces fetch millions.
Sorry guys, but Geocities is worth more than MySpace IMHO. |

I don't like these kind of sites. They liks create their on internet. This ain't good at all. Their own network if you prefer. Once you get in, you don't really have to surf the world wide web |
the price was to high no matter how you slice it, but with news corp behide it, myspace will soon be re-invented. 1-2 years
every 2-4 years there will be another great myspace, google, or yahoo... it's just like us americans, we like change. it's like you go out with a girl for like 2-4 years, she's great, but... change is sometimes good and sometimes bad, myspace change was great. ifreinds was almost great...lol it's all going to change forever. |
myspace was not a new idea or even that great of one but for whatever reason it caught on with people and thats what made it worth so much. its almost angering sometimes to think that such a simple idea made so much money but probably more jealousy than anything.
|
GREAT!
Tom, congrats! |
I dont understand why it got so popular. Ive tried it and I really fucking hate it.
