Is it easy for you to change a sponsor links on your web pages?

I often wonder if sponsors think when they ask us to replace URLs we only need to press one key and the 1000s of pages that have been built automatically update with the new URLS!

scottybuzz 07-21-2006 07:24 PM

could do it with frontpage

I know you are using Gallery Admin - put it to better use ;)

Sure I use GallAdmn. But I also have 1000s of free sites, each with dozen of mirrors, that are in HTML.

That is a huge sponsor pet peeve of mine. However depending on your setup, lets say you had 1000's of pages on a server with ssh access. You could find and replace all the links on all the pages on your server with 1 unix command.

Well sure, the existing pages will be a bitch, but I meant future proof it w/ another install of GA. A seperate install simply for traffic. Just link to http://www.domain.com/traffic/?crazy-single-girl-site on all your pages. Then when the site in your link, (http://www.this-slut-went-nuts.com for example) you only have to change out the one link.

depending on the reason sometimes i stop promoting a sponsor when they ask this

Another install of GA? I would first need to be able to reach Tue which I can't.
I see what your saying but for free site builder, using GA to make fs is kind of not very practical!

I'd probably use the "replace" feature in my editor...still would be a big hassle tho.

Good point Alex.

Before you do any more sites - take 20 paces back and consider this:

(a) What happens if a sponsor need link changes (as you said)

(b) What can I do if I want to dump a sponsor and replace with another?

There are ways of handling this - some elements could be SSI, others could be scripting. Either way, it's well worth spending some planning time on.

Got a setup here where any sponsor can be dumped/replaced or linkage changed etc, over a range of networks and prob takes no more than 20 mins to activate on .. dunno exactly.. around 5000 free sites.

Even if it takes a week to work out a suitable scenario - it's well worth it :thumbsup

Me I simply do not change the link on my static pages, not worth the effort, and often just delete the pages if they are one sponsor pages.

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-21-2006 07:49 PM

yes, i just change the link in my admin control panel and they are updated site wide...

jayeff 07-21-2006 07:56 PM

I can change links quite easily, but I usually take a very close look at sponsors who require me to. I guess there must have been one or two good ones along the way, but usually changing links seems to be one of those things which goes along with never answering emails and the other symptoms of thumb firmly planted in rectum.

MaddCaz 07-21-2006 07:57 PM

I dunno..hhhmmm

Hotrocket 07-21-2006 08:26 PM

Build your pages using a ssi or php include for your sponsor links and you can switch out links by changing 1 file or just a cpl if you have multiple versions..its the only way to go..I've been down that road before.

I can switch out sponsors on hundreds of pages in a matter of minutes..

But I agree the sponsors act like its no big deal...

BlackCrayon 07-21-2006 09:17 PM

a pain in the ass, i still have 100's of pages unfortunately with dead or shitty sponsors i want to replace but simply can't find the time. i need to switch the ads over to php or something. i used to use ssh with a program called centralad back in the day but it was sucking up so much bandwidth. i guess that doesn't matter as much now with bandwidth being much cheaper but still.

Excepts for my freesite, hub and gallery pages, all my other web pages are run by scripts. But you are probably right, I should spend time planing a solution to faciliate links replacemens on my future freesites.
