Study: Indianapolis has 5th-fastest Growing Hispanic Population

A new study out says the Circle City has one of the country's fastest growing Hispanic populations. That's means big money and challenges for Indiana.

"In the last ten years, Indianapolis has become the hot destination for Hispanics," said Ricardo Gambetta, Latino Affairs Director.

So much so, that a new report says Indianapolis has the nation's fifth fastest growing Hispanic population in America and Mexicans make up 70 percent of the state's entire Hispanic population.

"We were maybe surprised a little bit at how easily the Mexican population is integrating into the economy and into the community here," said John Clark, Sagamore Institute for Policy Research.

The Sagamore Institute's John Clark says Mexicans are coming to Indiana for the quality of life, lower cost of living, jobs and education.

"In other words, they come here for the same reasons other people come here," said Clark.

And once here, they spend big money. When it comes to taxes, the State of Indiana collects more than $200 million a year from legal and illegal Mexican immigrants alone. And they account for almost $14 million in residential real estate taxes.

Yet, that's nothing compared to Hispanic buying power in Indiana. The study says it hit $4.8 billion in 2005 and it's expected to reach $7.1 billion by 2010.

"This information shows without any doubt that immigration has very important positive impacts for the state," said Sergio Aguilera Beteta, Mexican Consul General of Indianapolis.

Yet, amid the high numbers and Indiana's changing population are big challenges, language, class, the economic gap and education.

"Those problems persist. Nationally, one out of every four high school drop outs is a Mexican or is actually from Mexico," Beteta said.

Yet, half of Mexicans currently living in Indianapolis are native born Americans. Some say education for adults remains a big priority.

"For the last several years, Indianapolis has been taking the lead on the national level for Hispanics and for example Indianapolis was the first city in the nation to offer English classes on TV on local public access television," said Gambetta.

Latino Public Affairs Director Ricardo Gambetta says the city sponsors the mayor's Latino forum every year to provide access to information and services. For them, getting people the help they need will make Cinco de Mayo and other events cause for true celebration.

Of course its propaganda. How can an influx of illegals and terrorists over running your state have a "very prositive impact" on it. Sales taxes are collected on the illegals.

It's Indiana. Anything is an improvement.
