Are People in the USA Really This Stupid?

In threads I have read here relating to drugs or gambling or [insert random vice here], it seems that the prevailing answer to everything is "legalize it, tax it". Dont get me wrong, its nice that you are all so open to legalization. Thats a good thing. Its the tax it part I dont get. Why tax it? Dosent the government have enough revenue streams yet?

Here is a list of the current taxes we have:

Federal Income Tax
Federal Unemployment Tax
Workers Compensation Tax
Social Security Tax
Medicare Tax
State Income Tax
State Unemployment Tax
School Ta
Sales Taxes (State and Local)
Real Estate Tax
Property Tax
Building Permit Tax
Well Permit Tax
Septic Permit Tax
Utility Taxes
Severence Tax
Corporate Income Tax
Accounts Receivable Tax
Privilege Tax
Inventory Tax
Food License Tax
Fuel permit tax

IRS Penalties
IRS Interest Charges
Liquor Tax
Luxury Taxes
Marriage License Tax
Service Charge Taxes
Telephone federal excise tax
Telephone federal universal service fee tax
Telephone federal, state and local surcharge taxes
Telephone minimum usage surcharge tax
Telephone recurring and non-recurring charges tax
Telephone state and local tax
Telephone usage charge tax
Vehicle Sales Tax
Vehicle License Registration Tax
Recreational Vehicle Tax
Trailer registration tax
Road Toll Booth Taxes
Toll Bridge Taxes
Toll Tunnel Taxes
Watercraft registration Tax
Gasoline Tax
Road Usage Taxes (Truckers)
Dog License Tax
Fishing License Tax
Hunting License Tax
Cigarette Tax

The more money the government has, the more things it tries to do to/for/with it's citizens. And the more its tenticals seep into our daily lives. Dosent it seem that the best way to reduce government is also the same way you reduce the power of a corportation: bleed it dry of money. As companies run out of capital, they downsize to try and survive. We have been supersizing our government for the last 100 or so years in the worst way. Its long past time for the government to feel the pain of a bad economy, where we dont buy as much (remit as much in taxes) and shop the competition.

Alot of those are elective taxes, not all states have income tax, some are for businesses in specific industries and dont apply to many people.

But yes thats alot of revenue

czarina 07-20-2006 09:42 PM

Its a big list, but when you consider how much they pay themselves, and how much it costs to run the US government.

Stumps 07-20-2006 09:42 PM

Evil1 07-20-2006 09:45 PM

PMdave 07-20-2006 09:46 PM

awesomenaut 07-20-2006 09:48 PM

yeah, but at least you get a good education, a higher standard of living and a much lower gini index than america.

...not that i would want to live there, they just get rewards for their taxes that we don't.

Antonio 07-20-2006 09:53 PM

nothing out of the ordinary I'd say, it's not like you have fornication tax

phypon 07-20-2006 10:20 PM

Taxes suck. It's all part of perpetuating the machine. By that I mean, and I have seen it first hand, gov't agencies (state level programs created by federal gov't and state programs that receive a certain amount of federal appropriations) create needs and purposely overspend their budgets. By overspending their budgets they are allotted and ask for more money from the federal gov't and state gov'ts. Thus they are ensuring that they recieve more money for the next fiscal year in which they hire more employees (someone's friend), need more vehicles (buy themselves a top of the line vehicle with they use for work and personal use) and other bullshit. It's a fucking harp routine that allows states and federal to increase taxes.

Don't forget, they can hide taxes too. Taxes do not only come in the form of income tax but also in goods, such as alcohol, gas, cigs, food, etc... Many ways to hide the tax increases.

Figures do not lie, but liars sure can figure!

I know, this was a rant. Not apologizing though. I just paid a shit load of tax on the beer I just drank and the cigs I just smoked! : (

phypon, actually, food is heavily subsidized in the US.

pocketkangaroo 07-20-2006 10:34 PM

I think they say tax it because we know that without taxing it heavily, it has no shot of being legal.

L-Pink 07-20-2006 10:37 PM

You forgot the "Alternative Minimum Tax"

If your account saves you to much money this beauty kicks in :helpme

fl_prn_str 07-20-2006 10:44 PM

You forgot the fee's that the Strippers pay in Vegas and Atlanta...they have to buy a stripper license?basically its for local law enforcement to do a background check on a potential dancer to see if she has any outstanding warrants or has been convicted of prostitution.

ajk_photography 07-21-2006 02:43 PM

We have here in EU shorter list probably, but we pay more in total..

I agree 100%, thats why I will most likely never vote for a democrat.

Well, I dont plan to vote for democrats while I'm alive, but I'm sure once I'm dead, my social security number will vote for democrats in many elections.

Quagmire 07-21-2006 04:45 PM

comed on up to Canada and enjoy our taxes. you don't know what tax is.

stickyfingerz 07-21-2006 04:48 PM

Yes Legalize weed, and prostitution and tax it, then drop all the other taxes quite a bit. That would bring in more revenue than a gas tax imo.

Ah yes. The brilliant "sin tax" proposal. I was waiting for this one. Havent you ever noticed how they never seem to get around to repealing or lowering the tax on the other side of the equation? Look at the tax on our phone bills. An illegal, unconsitutional tax that was supposed to fund the Spanish-American war and has since been collected illegally for something like 200 years.

L0rdJuni0r 07-21-2006 05:00 PM

scary list....

MaddCaz 07-21-2006 05:00 PM

yes people really are that stupid...

I think most would gladly pay a tax rather than trying to score some weed, then have to worry about doing jail time for it. Same goes for hookers.
