What a fucking day (police, a swedish jew and fucked-up people from Miami)

So, the movers FINALLY show up - 4 days later than they were supposed to, well, actually 9 days. Anyway...

A little breakdown: The sales rep who told us a bunch of shit would happen (which didn't) was fired while our items were in transit.

The moving company slapped an extra $500 on the bill for "supplies"

The moving company sold the job to the highest bidder, which I was told 3 times they would NOT do.

The moving company tried to tell me I made a verbal agreement to pay more and in the same breath told me they could not honor what my rep told me because it wasn't in the contract.

Anyway, to the story - it gets better!

They show up in an 18 wheeler, and the driver; who is old, jewish and has a thick swedish accent (??) immediately starts arguing with me because he claims he can't fit the truck into the parking lot. This old fucker has got some attitude from the get-go.

I say there are two ways in, and one will work.

He maintains I pay an extra $300 in "labor" plus rent a U-Haul to shuttle the items to the apartment.

I refuse. I tell him the moving company needs to cover that, I didn't agree to these conditions.

He attempts to get in his semi to leave, I tell him if he leaves I'm calling the cops to report my property stolen.

In the meantime, I am on a drop-call-return-call-screaming-match with this dumb bitch in some office in Miami who at one point says I don't have a choice, at another says she doesn't care what happens as it's not her company and then still later says I have no reason not to trust her.

He calls my bluff, and the next thing you know the cop comes back with the truck driver in the back seat. The police officer, who was abnormally helpful, proceeded to physically show the driver the route to take.

Suddenly, and without a hitch, there he is with the truck and that portion is forgotten about.

So they start loading and I see boxes with FRAGILE marked all over them smashed, I mean SMASHED like they read FRAGILE and then threw it off the truck.
  • Next comes my desk, destroyed.
  • Bicycles - holes in the spokes on all tires (wtf?)
  • Entertainment center - back panel busted
  • Bookshelf - top of shelf ripped off
  • Couch - wood splintered and busted up on the arm
  • 2 end tables with 5 broken legs
  • An entire box of collectibles broken
  • A lost table
  • A severely scratched dresser
  • And a partridge in a pair tree.

This is 3/4 of my furniture - the WHOLE reason I hired a mover so I wouldn't have to throw this shit away to squeeze into a U-Haul - DESTROYED.

Oh yeah, and no proper assembly and position as promised.

I made it soooo easy for these guys. Everything was labeled, there was water at the site, cool AC running, a nice tip to the guys who picked up and I sorted the items by weight FOR them before pickup.

I am so fucking pissed, been checking every box for more broken items all night long.

Lesson? NEVER hire a mover, EVER.

Pics coming...

wedouglas 07-19-2006 12:04 AM

Call the TV station. Don't all stations have those Problem Solve squads that go after bad companies?

If they take your story, that company will get slammed hard on TV.

wdsguy 07-19-2006 12:09 AM

And yeah, I had a contract; but the fact remained that they had my shit and were holding all the cards.

The driver was trying to bank, the moving company didn't care because they already got their money and I was looking to NOT get screwed.

Overall I'm getting mine, though. Tomorrow comes the claim-filing with the moving company, a claim to my personal insurance, a complaint to the DOT, a letter to the BBB and finally small claims court if nothing else works out.

$2500 bought me busted furniture and a fucking headache. :Oh crap

Nono, the guys in Miami who picked it up I tipped VERY well, there's no reason to treat my items like that.

They were the ones who destroyed everything, not the truck driver.

And there was no anti-anything other than people trying to fuck me, jewish or not; I don't have any feelings good or bad towards any religion etc..

That was irrelevant to what happened, just colorful narration.

SmokeyTheBear 07-19-2006 08:41 AM

i watched a consumer report recently on moving companies , and you got very very lucky.. they had this lady on who was moving some stuff and when the movers showed up 2 weeks late they wanted an extra $2000 or something ,and the lady of course wouldnt pay because she had a signed contract stating the amount , so dude hopped in the truck to leave and the lady blocked the truck with her car and called the cops , and they came , and of course they cant enforce a contract so they had to let buddy drive away with their stuff. then the moving company charged her some huge daily fee to store her shit until she came up with the extra 2k , after eventually paying the 2 extra thousand dollars plus like another 1k in storage fee's half her shit was either missing or damaged.

dissipate 07-19-2006 08:45 AM

BVF 07-19-2006 08:59 AM

I had two strapping white boys from two men and a truck move my shit without a hitch while I sat on the porch eating church's chicken and drinking Colt 45.

gooddomains 07-19-2006 09:04 AM

movers are most of the time total scammers

cellmoresmut 07-19-2006 09:08 AM

Yes there was a report on 60 mins or such a few years ago exposing the ripoff those moving companies do. The show weighed the stuff prior to pick up and the company tried to bill them for excess weight plus all sots of "extras".
But I don't know how'll you'll make out in local court as they are regulated by federal law Interstate Commerce or somesuch.
Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

stickyfingerz 07-19-2006 09:14 AM

Hate to hear that Luv. :( Hmm wont a large group of us be in the Miami area in a few weeks. :uhoh :winkwink:

northboy 07-19-2006 09:15 AM

If that ever happened to me with a moving company. I'd make sure I knew where their HQ office was, or where they stored their 18 wheelers and just get back some revenge. Pop some tires, i don't care what, just make sure I get even.

That's funny ... and I will probably steal that line :1orglaugh

justsexxx 07-19-2006 09:19 AM

How can they come so late? When I make an agreement in The Netherlands for let's say 1 august 2006 9am, they show up at 1 august 2006 9am...And so far all my experiences are great with movers...

Sad this is not everywhere the case...

Antonio 07-19-2006 09:34 AM

HOLLY FUCK, THAT'S ON E THING THAT ALMOST NEVER HAPPENS HERE, moved the beginning of the month - it went smooth, guess every country has its shit

fuck the cap locks, too lazy to re-type it

bastardsquad 07-19-2006 10:10 AM

Sorry to hear that. Not to add to your stress but i thought i would share. My friends moved from CA to FL last year. The same thing happened to their stuff. At the end the damage was well over six grand in total. Two vintage Triumphs were damaged in the move, a ton of personal items, and most of their furniture. I think at the end they got about two grand out of them through their lawyer.

I've heard so many horror stories about movers. No thanks. I'll drive it myself if i ever move again.

spunkmister 07-19-2006 10:27 AM

Had friends who had major issues with movers back in SF..so when it was my time to move I just got a bunch of friends together and paid them instead and hired a big ole Uhaul...worked out fine but it was only a 35minute drive to the new place...did have a dresser that got busted but it was a shitty Ikea one so no great loss.

Stallion 07-19-2006 10:34 AM

damn that sucks. hope the moving company is insured. if so they are responsible for the damage and must replace it. When we moved from Florida to Tennessee we used United and they were great. They are one of the few that had a guaranteed price and the insurance was good. So we went with them.

dynastoned 07-19-2006 10:38 AM

holy fuck.. honestly if it was me id go to their office and start cracking skulls. thats bullshit..

Mr. Romance 07-19-2006 10:40 AM

Bro i am just glad you made it safely...FUCK MOVERS!

Mr. Romance

Sosa 07-19-2006 11:05 AM
