*** How Did You Choose Your Tattoo?***

There are way too many choices out there, so how did you decide on what artwork to put on your body and where on your body to put it?

sherie 07-18-2006 02:37 PM

Have someone design it for you. And where you put it, well I just wanted them everywhere lol

Mr. Romance 07-18-2006 02:38 PM

I chose not to get them; however, I completely respect those who have them...

When i thought about getting a tatoo ages ago, i couldn't think what the hell i would want to get, considering it will be on my body for life.

Hence the reason i don't have any tatoos. I'm glad though, because now i'm at the stage i don't like them anyway...

Raven 07-18-2006 02:54 PM

i've wanted one for the longest time...i've lost close to sixty pounds and i'm just about muscle bound....it's my reward but i am so on the fence, because:
1. they are permanent
2. they are permanent
3. there are so many choices

dodger21 07-18-2006 02:56 PM

fuck, i hate tatoos

anne 07-18-2006 02:59 PM

I knew i wanted a fairy on my lower back so i spent 4 months searching out fairys on the internet till i found a design I liked. With my second one I new i wanted the om symbol and i wanted it on my neck but i wasnt sure design. So i just let the tatoo artist come up with a design. ;)

Gina 07-18-2006 03:05 PM

Almost all of my tattoos are concepts I came up with myself and had custom designed. Most of them commemorate some significant period of my life, good or bad. I pretty much decide where to put them based on which body parts I still have room left on. I am kinda sorta running out of room. I only have a space for one more on my arms, and I'm having that one designed right now.

Jman 07-18-2006 03:16 PM

I go with originality, starts with an idea of mine and then I work with the artist.

I have 3 artist tattooing me and so far i think the are doin an awesome job.

LiveDose 07-18-2006 03:17 PM

My Father's family has samurai origins going way back. I have the crest on my back.

MetaMan 07-18-2006 03:18 PM

choose anything, 99% of adult webmasters have a shitty looking tatoo, so you cannot go wrong even if it is bad. :)

sonofsam 07-18-2006 03:18 PM

If you're the same raven i talked to on the phone... you should get a tattoo of a dollar sign infront of a big house... that way instead of blabbing on about how you've made your living in adult and that it paid for your house etc etc etc... you can just show them your tattoo and save your breath

:thumbsup

I'm a sig whore 07-18-2006 03:22 PM

i drew my last one.

But, it's so permanent....I don't want a shitty looking tattoo....I've waited so long to get one, it has to be perfect.

how can this thread *NOT* be about me?

it's clearly titled

"how did you choose your tattoo"

Raven 07-18-2006 03:52 PM

So, for those who design their own, that's awesome; but, how did you come up with the concepts? Did you search the internet, like you did, anne?

JMan....did you draw from a period in your life or dream it? Or are you just one of those creative ones....:)

LOL:D - I wish I were as sure as you sound...so you're ready when you finally decide. good for you.

there simply wasn't enough room to say, how did you choose your tattoo, except for you, sonofsam.

i have no quarrel with you. one phone call, what, over a year ago? let it go.

Bookstores are a really good place to get ideas. For a few years my kids and I went through hell with a wicked-stepmother situation, and I found a great picture of a wicked stepmother with her hair on fire in a Grimm's Fairytales book, which now takes up about a quarter of my arm. I have a heart full of pins with my first husband's name on my foot, and I got the idea for that design from a Tim Burton book. I have a sleeve that I mostly based on a children's book about Dia de los Muertos en espanol.

And other things I just came up with on my own. I've got a housewife with a giant rolling pin and a bunch of pills swirling around her head, which is from the "Oh god I am going to die if I spend one more minute as a housewife!" period of my life. I've got a big bubbling bottle of poison with my second husband's name on it. Got a big Medusa on my chest so men will stop leering at my cleavage for fear of turning to stone. Got some two-headed birds because I have a habit of bringing home unloved, deformed animals. And the list goes on and on. Really, inspiration is everywhere. You've just got to think of something that really means something to you. Something that has been very significant in your life, rather than something that you picked off of a tattoo shop wall.

you've got a great sense of humour and irony.

I have to agree. All of my ink is special to me for some reason or another. You definately have to make sure its what you want and where you want it. Don't be scared, just do your research and don't give in until you are happy. ;)

psili 07-18-2006 04:57 PM

First one: Was walking over the bridge between classes at the University of Denver. This old dude had a little exhibit of the books he wrote. We talked a bit, he gave me a little package of books / pamphlets and on one of them was this cool line-art piece of a sun. Got that on my lower left back.

Second one: Drew it. Kind of a ying-yang with the sun and moon. Got an itch to finally get it done and unfortunately chose a poor tattooist. Going to get it redone when I get around to it. Got that on my upper right shoulder-blade.

Third one: Merged two ruins that I liked the meaning of to form one and got that tattooed on my upper left shoulder.

*shrug*

Grapesoda 07-18-2006 05:58 PM

raven . . I chose semi traditional stuff because it really holds the 'look' . . never gonna look out of date or stupid . . went for big works because it's no goof out thing to get tatts, it's a big commitment . . I have a back and 2 sleeves . . I said I want flowers and skulls . . the artist figured it out -bmnb

Sveindt Beindt 07-18-2006 06:11 PM

Got my first tatto in 1977 never ending storie still a little space left, tattoo like me at least 30k :thefinger :kisskiss

MarinaAngela 07-18-2006 06:22 PM

it needs to be something meaningful to you :thumbsup

betabomb 07-18-2006 06:25 PM

i woke up and there it was

reynold 07-18-2006 06:44 PM

Having a tattoo is not on my mind yet. However, if ever I'm going to have one, I would choose something meaningful to me. I can have it either at my back or thigh. :)

Raven 07-18-2006 07:21 PM

that is the difficult part...not sure i want a 'statement'...i want something cool and something that suits me...you're all giving such good advice...and believe me....i will take my time..i've waited this long...

it's very exciting and scary at the same time...

anyone get one on their foot? i've heard that one is the most painful and takes the longest to heal...

Gina 07-18-2006 07:33 PM

I have a fairly large one on the top of my foot. It was one of my more painful tattoos. I limped for two weeks and couldn't wear shoes while it healed. The day after I got it I got poison oak all over my foot. It made it so much worse, plus sucked half the color out of it. Because of that, even when it was brand new, my tattoo has always looked fucked up and old. But I don't want to deal with the shoeless, limping thing again, so I'm not bothering to get it touched-up.

Raven 07-19-2006 07:16 AM

Gina, that's what I heard about getting one on the foot. Painful. Takes a while to heal.
I train three days a week and work out another 5 days....I can't NOT wear shoes and limp for two weeks, so I guess the foot is out.

I'm thinking shoulder....right shoulder...

See? I'm narrowing down placement. All I need now is the what....and I'm set.
