Why is Lois Lane engaged to Cyclops?

In Superman Returns, the role of Richard (Lois's fiance) is played by the same guy who played Cyclops in the X-Men movies.

Apparently Lois gets around in the super hero community :Graucho

That was weird they'd use Cyclops in that movie when they could have used 1,000s of other male actors. Very confusing.
And thats why they didnt use him much in xmen 3, because he was filming superman. Made X3 suckier
