When to move to dedicated hosting?!?

When should you move from virtual to dedicated?

salsbury 06-07-2002 10:01 AM

tomorrow, if at all possible.

in all seriousness, i'd say when you hit 1Mbit/s average it's probably wise to move to a dedicated server. of course, it ultimately depends on how loaded your shared server is - if the other sites on it are holding yours back, clearly, move ASAP. but if they're all non-script sites just pushin content, it shouldn't hurt to stay there.

basically, if you're comfortable with your site's performance now, there's no need to move. if you're worried others on the server will hold you back, move. and if you get a good deal on dedicated hosting (sometimes you'll get a lower bw cost, even if you're payin to rent a server), take it. :)

how are the virtual servers on likewhoa?
I was thinking of setting up with them, and going dedicated if my new site starts using $500/month in bandwidth.

Darren 06-07-2002 10:05 AM

thanks any other oppinions? any hosts? what bandwidth would u consider usually doing per a month before moving.

Well im just moving over there now so not sure :)

the same idea u represent above is my current plan as well.

As soon as you can afford to.
Once you're making enough $$ to spring for your own box you should do it.
You'll have a lot more control over your traffic and a lot less headaches.
Going to a dedicated server was the second best thing I ever did. Moving from cogent to tier 1 bandwidth was the first :thumbsup

Darren 06-07-2002 10:13 AM

ok why was it the best thing though len?

Jamie 06-07-2002 10:21 AM

Move as soon as it's affordabel for you. The great thing about a dedicated is you don't have to share resources with the other guys on the server. More HD space, more CPU and Memory to serve your sites exclusively.

Darren 06-07-2002 10:26 AM

it is easily affordable but a present not much bandwidth is used.

how much bandwidth b4 moving?

TazBo 06-07-2002 10:42 AM

Darren, we have some specials on our dedicated servers. Shoot me an e-mail for details.

Hi
Here is an excerpt from an article I wrote a couple months ago about this very thing.

"Now, some specifics on running a paysite. Over the years I have seen some webmasters do this, and while you think you can't afford a dedicated server, the truth is you can't afford not to get to a dedicated server. Trying to run your business on a shared server with a hundred other users can be a major downfall in your success. At any time of the day another user can be doing something that is causing a slow down and cause your websites to grind to a halt. Or worse, completely crashing the server and leaving you helpless.

While a good hosting company would not let their servers get overloaded like this, it is best to be on your own and free of anyone else's mistakes. I cannot stress enough the importance of dedicated webhosting in the adult industry. If you're currently running on a shared account, do some shopping around. Prices on bandwidth are at an all-time low and there is no reason you should not have your own server."

thats no shit, moose. :thumbsup

i can definately recommend moose's phatservers.net. prices are good, excellent hosting and support.

why do you keep asking me to suck your dick?
do you usually approach men like this?
does this tactic usually work?

the ladies must fall to your feet when they see you asking other guys to suck your dick.

when i moved to dedicated my traffic doubled :)

hahmike 06-07-2002 01:04 PM

...when i moved to dedicated, I needed to hire a network engineer. Joking, you need it if you have traffic - otherwise you are loosing pure money.

Shit happens on virtual hosting. Wembaster on the same box might set up crappy.script x 10 and jam the box. Not a problem, but wait until your lovely boxmate spams a little bit and angry people nukes the tiny server down... and it's down hours if not a whole day. So, I decided to move on dedicated when I realized that I'm living from this. Simply, Don't risk.

foe 06-07-2002 04:17 PM

I would swtich as soon as you can afford it, saves a lot of time in the end when your host decides they dont want to host you becuase you use up to much bandwith or resources
