Is Mick short for Dominick?

or is Mick a "stand alone" name on it's own?

notabook 07-16-2006 08:19 AM

Either or imo... though I've only known people named Mick (two women, one man). Have never met anyone named Dominick.

I know a guy named Mick so I guess it can be both.

sassynaughtygirl 07-16-2006 08:26 AM

it's a nickname for Michael.

Damian_Maxcash 07-16-2006 08:29 AM

I think its short for Micheal.....

I know a Dominick and we call him 'Dom' - in fact we call him 'asshole' most of the time, but thats another story.

CamsLord 07-16-2006 08:29 AM

both :2 cents:

StuartD 07-16-2006 08:31 AM

Actually, I don't think Mick is a short for Dominick...
Nick could be, but not Mick.

When in doubt, hit a wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mick

"Mick"
Many Irish surnames begin with "Mc" or "Mick", as in McDowell, or McShane, from which people from Ireland often get the nickname "Mick". (Mc usually means "son of". For instance the surname MacDonnell literally means son of Donnell.) Many Irish people are also named after the Irish leader Michael Collins, making Michael (Mick) a very common name.

It is sometimes used, usually with a lower-case "m", as an offensive slang term in British English and American English for an Irish person or a Roman Catholic. This is unrelated to the name Michael, however.

The term "mick" is also used as slang in the phrase taking the mickey or take the mick meaning to tease
